I have a pc with windows 7/ 64bit and an Acer Aspire one netbook with the 32 bit version both evaluation copies build 7100. i have full control from 64bit to 32 bit but not the other way around. The little Acer finds the homegroup fine but wont open the folders on the other machine. I dont know whether the difference in 'bits' makes a difference as i dont want to change the 64 down to 32. Anyone got any thoughts?

The issue you are facing with sharing files between your two machines, one running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 and the other running a 32-bit version, can be due to compatibility issues between the different architectures. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this problem:

Check Network Sharing Settings:

  1. Network Discovery and File Sharing: Ensure that network discovery and file sharing are turned on for both machines.
  2. Homegroup Settings: Confirm that both PCs are part of the same homegroup and have the appropriate sharing settings configured.

    Permissions and Credentials:

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this problem:

Check Network Sharing Settings:

  1. Network Discovery and File Sharing: Ensure that network discovery and file sharing are turned on for both machines.
  2. Homegroup Settings: Confirm that both PCs are part of the same homegroup and have the appropriate sharing settings configured.

    Permissions and Credentials:

  3. Permissions: Check the sharing permissions of the folders you are trying to access to ensure that both machines have the necessary permission to access them.
  4. Credentials: Try accessing the shared folders using the correct username and password if required.

    Firewall and Antivirus:

  5. Firewall Settings: Temporarily disable the firewall on both machines to check if it's blocking the connection.
  6. Antivirus Software: Some antivirus programs come with their own firewall. Ensure they are not blocking the file sharing.

    Workgroup Configuration:

  7. Workgroup Name: Make sure both computers are in the same workgroup.
  8. Network Location: Verify that the network location on both machines is set to "Home" or "Work" for easier sharing.

    Bit Architecture Compatibility:

  9. 32-bit vs. 64-bit: While it's not common for bit architecture to affect file sharing, ensure both machines are updated with the latest network drivers and Windows updates.

    Additional Tips:

    • Shared Folders: Instead of using Homegroup, try sharing folders directly by right-clicking on the folder, selecting "Properties," then the "Sharing" tab.
    • Map Network Drive: You can also try mapping a network drive to access the shared folders more easily.
By following these steps and ensuring that both machines have the correct settings, permissions, and network configurations, you should be able to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue of not being able to access folders between your 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 machines.
