Windows 7 Homegroup shares disappearing after server reboot

I've been going in circles on this for a while now and have yet to fix the issue.

Computer A is acting a a file server. It has two external hard drives plugged into it. These drives contain music, movies, photos, etc. I share each media folder by right-clicking it and going Share With -> Homegroup (Read/Write). Everything works fine - I can see the shared folders on computers B and C.

If computer A is restarted, the shares disappear. If the shared folder is on C drive, no problem, it will come back. It just seems to be that if they are on an external drive they disappear and cannot be seen by other computers. I have tried adding the external folders as a target location to the default Homegroup Library folders, but the issue persists. I have to go back to Computer A and add them to the Homegroup again, then they can be seen on the other computers.

Network Discovery is ON, File and Printer Sharing is ON, Public Folder Sharing is ON, Media Streaming is ON, 128 bit encryption, Password Protected Sharing is ON, Windows manages Homegroup connections.

All computers are in the same Workgroup. Antivirus is Security Essentials, Windows Firewall is ON on all machines.

All computers are running Win 7 Ultimate x64 SP1, connected via hardwired LAN.

Any help would be appreciated, this one is really kicking my butt.

Thanks in advance,

Richard

Solution
Richard, it seems like you've put in a lot of effort into setting up your file server and sharing the external drives across your network. The issue you're facing with the shared folders disappearing after a restart can be frustrating, but there are a few troubleshooting steps we can take to try and resolve this. Here are some suggestions to help address the problem:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Drive Letter Assignments:
    • Ensure that the external hard drives maintain the same drive letter assignments after a restart. Sometimes, the drive letters can change, causing the shared folders to disappear.
    []Network Profile Settings:
    • Confirm that the network profile on Computer A is set to "Private"...

    []Network Profile Settings:
    • Confirm that the network profile on Computer A is set to "Private" to allow file sharing on the network. You can check this in the Network and Sharing Center.
    [
    ]Check File Sharing Settings:
    • Verify that the shared folders on the external hard drives have the correct permissions set for sharing (Read/Write access).
    []Update Network Drivers:
    • Update the network drivers on all computers to ensure compatibility and stability in networking.
    [
    ]HomeGroup Settings:
    • Double-check the HomeGroup settings on all computers and make sure they are properly configured. You may consider leaving and rejoining the HomeGroup to refresh settings.
    []Disable HomeGroup and Use Workgroup:
    • Consider disabling the HomeGroup feature and using traditional workgroup sharing settings. HomeGroup can sometimes cause issues with sharing across different systems.
    [
    ]Check for Windows Updates:
    • Make sure all Windows updates are installed on all computers. Sometimes, updates can include fixes for networking-related issues.
  2. Third-Party Software Interference:
    • Temporarily disable the antivirus and firewall on Computer A to see if they are causing any interference with the sharing of external drives.

      Additional Suggestions:

      • Ensure that the external drives are connected before the network services start to help maintain consistency in shared folder visibility.
      • Consider mapping the shared folders as network drives on Computers B and C to ensure they stay accessible.
Try these steps and see if they help in resolving the issue with shared folders disappearing after a restart. If the problem persists, feel free to provide more details for further assistance. Good luck!
