Before upgrading to Windows 7, I would click on a hulu tv show to watch and the sound would start playing with the video without any problems. Now, with Windows 7, the sound will not play with the video. But sound still works with itunes that I tried to play immediately after the sound didn't work for hulu. The speakers are on, the computer is not muted, and sound works for other programs, but the sound won't play for the streaming video websites. why not?

Solution
It seems like you are encountering an issue with sound not playing with video on streaming websites like Hulu after upgrading to Windows 7. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this problem:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Browser Compatibility: Ensure that the browser you are using to access Hulu is compatible with Windows 7. It's recommended to use the latest version of browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge for the best performance.
  2. Update Drivers: Check if your audio drivers are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause issues with sound playback. You can update your audio drivers through the Device Manager or by visiting the manufacturer's website for the...

You can update your audio drivers through the Device Manager or by visiting the manufacturer's website for the latest drivers.
  3. Browser Settings:
    • Clear Browser Cache: Clear the cache and cookies in your browser as this can sometimes interfere with sound playback.
    • Check Browser Settings: Ensure that the browser settings are not blocking sound on specific websites. Check the site settings in your browser to allow sound on Hulu.
[]Flash Player: Make sure that Adobe Flash Player is installed and up to date. Some streaming websites still use Flash for video playback, and an outdated version can lead to issues with sound. []Sound Settings:
    • Volume Mixer: Check the system Volume Mixer to see if sound levels are muted or set too low for the browser.
    • Playback Devices: Verify that the correct playback device is selected. Right-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar, select "Playback devices," and ensure the correct device is set as default.
[]Hardware Acceleration: Disable hardware acceleration in your browser settings. Sometimes, hardware acceleration can cause conflicts with sound playback in browsers. []Check Audio Output: Ensure that the audio output device is correctly connected and working. You mentioned that sound works for other programs, so the issue might be specific to the browser or the streaming website.
  4. Restart the Browser and Computer: Sometimes, a simple restart of the browser or the computer can resolve temporary software glitches causing the sound issue.

    Additional Notes:

    • If the issue persists after trying these steps, you may want to test sound playback on other streaming websites to see if the problem is specific to Hulu or affects all streaming services.
    • You can also try using a different browser to see if the issue is related to the browser you are currently using.
Try these steps and see if they help resolve the sound playback issue on Hulu and other streaming websites on your Windows 7 system. Let me know if you need further assistance!

I've had the same issue after upgrading to Windows 7—no sound on Hulu, but everything else like iTunes worked fine. It’s super frustrating. I contacted hulu customer support, but they just suggested basic troubleshooting, and unfortunately, it didn’t fix anything. So, I'm glad that I've found this discussion. Just in time! Thanks for sharing this info! I'll check it out in the hope it will help me fix the issue.

You're very welcome! You’re definitely not alone—sound issues with Hulu (and sometimes other streaming sites) after a Windows upgrade are surprisingly common. The fact that other apps like iTunes are working is actually a helpful clue: it usually means your audio drivers are installed and working, but there may be a browser or plugin issue — or a missing codec.
Here are a few extra tips, just in case you haven’t tried them yet:
  1. Browser Check:
Try Hulu in a different browser. If sound works there, the issue is with browser settings or extensions.
  2. Flash/HTML5 Conflicts:
(On older setups) Make sure Flash, if used, is up to date—or try forcing Hulu to use HTML5 if possible.
  3. Audio Output Settings:
Right-click the speaker icon > Playback Devices, and verify your preferred device is set as default (sometimes Windows 7 changes this).
  4. In-Browser Volume:
Double-check the video player itself—sometimes sites have their own mute setting.
  5. Windows Mixer:
With Hulu playing, right-click the speaker > Open Volume Mixer. Make sure your browser isn’t muted.
  6. Codecs:
Windows 7 was notorious for sometimes missing codecs after upgrade. Installing a codec pack (like K-Lite Codec Pack) can help.
  7. Driver Update:
Even if iTunes works, a clean reinstall of audio drivers (from your motherboard/sound card manufacturer, not Windows Update) might solve browser-specific quirks.
If you let me know what you’ve already tried or which browser you’re using, I can help tailor the suggestions a bit more. Crossing fingers the info shared here gets your streams sounding sweet again!
