Windows 7 Icon gone forever ?

Hey guys,

i'm a freshman here so hello @ all first.
First of all, don't care about my english mistakes because i'm from Germany ;-)

I've got Windows 7 prof. (64bit) since a couple days now and i'm very satisfied (for an MS OS ).
Just yesterday my Winamp.exe Icon decided to vanish and never come back...
I can't see it neither in the taskbar nor at the *.exe itself.
I tried everything... first of all, comlete removal of the prog, and re-install; didn't help at all.
tried looking in the registry in the shell extensions but couldn't find it. What did MS think while
removing the possibility for changing any icon through the file-properties ?!?! (this worked in XP)

So in short: How can i get my Icon back for the winamp.exe file ?
Funny thing is, in the other User account on my machine, its still there...

thx in advance for quick answers!

Hello and welcome to the windows 7 forums.

It's been quite some time since I've used winamp, but I believethe dfault directory should be C:\Program Files\Winamp.

Do a search for winamp.exe, right-click on it and choose Create Shortcut.

Now Pin it to the taskbar.

Also, does Winamp run on the 64-bit version of Windows 7?

Hi reghakr,

thanks for your support. I guess this is a missunderstanding...i didnt used the right words i guess.
What i am missing is not the icon itself more the picture of it :)
I surely know how to make a shortcut ;-)
Well, so i still have the shortcut added to the taskbar but it hasn't git the typical Winamp "picture"
instead it is the windows standard replacement if there is no known icon-picture (or however u call that thingy)

Hi and welcome. Your English is good ;)

Have you tried downloading the latest version here and installing it?

You mentioned you went through the registry, not sure if you meant that you tried this or not, but have a look anyways.

Lastly, are you able to create a shortcut to the .exe and Google for an icon and change that? Then you can pin that to taskbar etc.

I'd upload an icon for you but they seem to be embedded in the .exe file itself rather than its own file.

Funny thing was: The reg-key "Winamp.File" didnt exsist in my registry...so i created one, and
adjusted the right path for the DefaultIcon....didnt work.
Then i downloaded the Fix-tool offered in the winamp forum, didnt help as well ! (i killed my explorer.exe
and did a reboot...still same !

see attached screencap.

I tried that as well, no success. In Windows 7 the option to assign an icon to a shortcut, has been removed.

thx 4 ur help!

Go to Folder Options, make sure Hidden files are showing.

Go to %userprofile%\AppData\Local

Delete IconCache.db

Restart.

OK, do I have this straight now.........

The winamp.exe file in the directory has a generic icon, correct?

What version Winamp are you using?

Hey guys, sorry for my late response...i was pretty busy.

Well, i dont know exactly what u mean with "generic" but there is no
*.ico -file in the folder of winamp (look at my first screenshot)
So as i said, strange thing is, that in another profile on my system, the icon is there!
and theres still no *.ico - file in the directory.

About the Winamp Version, look at my 2nd scrren at the bottom of this post.

thx 4 ur help guys so far !

Hi ,

You will often find the icon is inside is inside the .exe - rather than a separate .ico file that is visible:

Hi,

okay, but unfortunately i have nothing to "edit" or proof the .exe
How could i do this ? In Windows7 it is not possible to change or look at icons
over the file-properties menu.

What i am wondering about is, if the icon is IN the .exe , why is it there in another
user profile on my machine ? Shouldn't it affect all user profiles because they're using the same
.exe file ?

regards

Hi,

thx for that tool. So i opened all icons for my winamp installation folder.
And: tadaaa ... there it is. All icons included in the winamp.exe . So now i can see and save them,
but how can i get windows to use it!?
I didnt found any other options in that tool than saving (extracting) the icons out of the file(s).

Put the icon in the Winamp folder in Program Files(x86).

Press shift and rt click on the winamp.exe - select Copy as path.

Rt click the desktop>New>Shortcut , paste in the path you just copied, Next, Finish.

Rt click on that new shortcut - Properties>Change icon- browse to the icon you just saved into the Winamp folder.

Hope it helps
