Presumably my PC can run Windows 8 - is the desktop look and use much the same as Windows 7

I doubt that but instead of playing may-bes you can download the windows 8 trial iso from Microsoft and test it for up-to 90 days… then either pay for a copy of 8, 8.1 or 7 once you have made an informed decision.

8 is a completely new and redesigned copy of Windows from the bios system up! You can adjust it until it looks like 7 as far as the desktop experience is used but that has more to do with how you want to use the computer to play games, browse the internet and connect android devices to it.
