Windows 7 Interrupted Update Issue

Thanks in advance for any help you may provide me. I accidentally powered down in the middle of the update process on my Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Asus laptop. Safe mode works. Normal mode does not. After logging in, after the “welcome” screen, I get either a black background or the default white wallpaper, both with mouse pointer arrow. CTRL-ALT-DEL brings up the normal screen that I can use to launch Task Manager. But Task Manager is unresponsive. Once, when I launched task manager and File/new task/regedit.exe it threw the ACMON error. Overall, everything seems to be running very slowly. Sometimes, Task Manager will not launch and I will get the pictured “Failure to Display…” error. I’ve booted a system repair disc from an external DVD and it’s no help. Startup Repair usually finds no problems, and the one time it did it couldn’t fix it. Said it couldn’t identify the problem but was likely a system configuration issue. System Restore and System Image Recovery won’t work for me because I don’t have any restore points and I don’t have an image of my system. Stupid, I know. I can access BIOS. How can I get back to my desktop and a normally functioning computer? Thanks again.
