Windows 7 Issues with Direct X 10 Games Crashing

Hey Guys,

First time poster, but I've used this forum to fix a few bugs I've had before, but I couldn't seem to find this one anywhere.

Recently, I've upgraded my Graphics Cards(Asus GeForece GTS 250 1GB), and it seems that even though they support DX10, all DX10 games crash out within about 20 seconds of starting (Makes me think that Win7 decided to bork something when I installed the new cards). This appears to be an issue with DX itself as far as I can see as if a game gets DX9 forced in the settings, it works again correctly.

The OS was only reinstalled about a day ago also, and is pretty fresh.

I have a Readout from Fallout 3 after it crashed just before.

Hi Mate,

I have both got the latest Drives 196.21 for nVidia, and have updated DirectX about a dozen times... However, apon searching It seemed that Fallout3 was listed under the DX10 titles? However, Modern Warfare 1 works correctly, and it's a DX9 game (I played about 30-40 mins, where Fallout3 and BFBC2[DX10 Version] won't run for more than 20 seconds [BC2 works when I force DX9 however]).

Thanks for the quick response :)

Weird because Fallout 3 is definitely a Dx9 game and doesn't appear (to run DX10) in this wiki list for DX10 titles:

Anyway getting back to your problem.. I wonder what your system Bios is like? Do you have the latest bios as this can make a difference.. Plus are you sure nothing is overheating?
Lastly, would you mind posting your system spec?

BIOS should be less than 2 months old (updated as I installed the system), and the entire rig is less than a few months old.
Here's some Excerpts from DXDiag.

I'm sure that the GPU's aren't overheating at all, and the monitors show that. I'm able to play Battlefield: Bad Company 2 when it's forced into DX9 Mode, however when it's forced into DX10 mode it crashes. Have tried some other games to see if they work, and only the ones which are forced to run in DX9 modes will run correctly.

Hi and welcome to the forum.. :)
Seems DX9 is giving you issues too as Fallout 3 is a DX9 game. Are your graphic drivers up to date?
If not download the latest version here:
Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Updating DirectX might be a good idea too:
Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime

It's good to be back.

Kemical's right, I'd have a look at the drivers, also see if the manufacture has forum, maybe your not alone.

A quick look see on me old mate Google
c0000005 directx 10 - Google Search

Which makes a good point, make sure the game has the very latest patch, any one who has ever played Company of Heroes know the value of having a full patched game!

Hi Mate,

Thanks for the help, but I think I finally resolved it. It was an issue with Windows itself. It seems that for some reason it installed it's own set of drivers for the GPU's which conflicted with the ones I installed off the nVidia website (196.21)... I removed all drivers from the PC, rebooted, and let windows automatically install the ones it wanted, and it appears to have worked.

Also, it seems it was the HD video's within Fallout3 itself which was causing the crash.
