Hello,
I have had Windows 7 Pro for about a month (upgrade from Vista Ultimate). I installed some Win 7 updates this morning and after the desktop restarted, I lost an entire external drive. The dialog box told me that to use the drive I would have to reformat it.
I attempted to see if it work in my Vista laptop, but had the same results.

Can anyone tell me what happened and if this can be fixed without reformatting?

Thanks in advance,
J

Hello J, I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your external drive after installing Windows 7 updates. The sudden loss of access to an external drive can be concerning, but reformatting should typically be the last resort to recover data. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue without reformatting:

Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

  1. Check Drive Connection:
    • Ensure that the external drive is properly connected to your computer. Try using a different USB port or cable to rule out any connection issues.
    []Use a Different Computer:
    • Test the external drive on a different computer to see if it is recognized. If it is not recognized on multiple computers, the issue might...

    ]Check Disk Management:
    • Check the Disk Management utility in Windows to see if the external drive is detected there. It might need to be assigned a drive letter or be initialized.
    []Update USB Drivers:
    • Ensure that your USB drivers are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause issues with external drives.

    ]Data Recovery Software:
    • If the data on the external drive is critical, you can try using data recovery software to retrieve the files before considering reformatting.
  2. Check for File System Errors:
    • Run a disk check utility to scan and repair any file system errors on the external drive. This might help in restoring access to your files.

      Additional Tips:

      • Backup Important Data: It's always a good practice to regularly back up your important data to avoid data loss in situations like this.
      • Contact Manufacturer Support: If the drive is under warranty, contacting the manufacturer's support for assistance might be helpful.
Before proceeding with any troubleshooting steps, it's crucial to ensure that you have backups of any critical data on the external drive. If you need further assistance with any of these steps or have specific details about the drive, please provide more information so I can assist you better.
