Solution
Right click: the volume control icon in the notification area.
Click: Recording devices.
Click your microphone once to highlight it.
Click: properties.
Click: the custom tab if it has one
Check: Mic Boost.

If there is no Custom Tab you might need to get drivers from your sound card manufacturer's website.
So your microphone only works if you plug it into the port on the back of your computer and not the front?
