Windows 7 monitor only recognized as generic pnp

After installing windows 7 on my laptop my secondary monitor doesn't come up at all. The laptop display works fine. I looked in device manager and it shows a generic pnp monitor. I've downloaded the latest drivers for my video card but so far nothing seems to work. I also loaded the software that came with the monitor and tried a different monitor. Any ideas out there?

essential the driver for a monitor is a small INF file, not related to video card drivers...suggest you hunt a old vista INF for it from makers website and force that to the hardware...worked on my lass's laptop. Although if the video cards panel isnt showing 2nd monitor as even available in the options I dunno what to do...
