My Asus laptop has an intermittent problem where the mouse curser will appear to be fine however when I click on things such as the task bar, exit or minimise buttons it will not do anything, the only way I can use the computer to get into things is by using the keyboard. This happens with both a usb and mouse touchpad. I have done a virus scan and nothing has shown up as well as checking the drivers for both the usb mouse and the touchpad mouse both are updated. It seems to have happened after a windows update. Restarting does fix it sometimes however not all the time.
How do I fix this?

Solution
It sounds like you are experiencing issues with your mouse cursor functionality on your Asus laptop after a Windows update. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this problem:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Update Mouse Drivers:
    • Make sure you have the latest drivers for both your USB mouse and touchpad. You mentioned you've already checked this, but you can try reinstalling the drivers or rolling back to a previous version to see if that helps.
    []Check Mouse Settings:
    • Verify the mouse settings in Windows. Sometimes, settings can be altered after a Windows update. Go to Settings > Devices > Mouse and make sure everything is configured correctly.

    [
    ]Run Windows Troubleshooter:
    • Use the Windows Troubleshooter to identify and fix common problems with hardware and devices. It can help diagnose and potentially resolve issues with your mouse.
    []Check for Software Conflicts:
    • Some software conflicts can cause issues with mouse functionality. Try booting into Safe Mode and see if the problem persists. If not, a third-party application might be the culprit.
    [
    ]System File Checker:
    • Run the System File Checker tool to scan and repair corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command sfc /scannow.
    []Check for Windows Updates:
    • Ensure that your system is up to date with the latest Windows updates. Sometimes, new updates can contain fixes for known issues.
    [
    ]Rollback Windows Update:
    • If the issue started after a specific Windows update, you can try rolling back that update. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history, and uninstall the problematic update.
    []Check for Malware:
    • Even though you've scanned for viruses, it's good to run a full system scan using Windows Defender or a reputable antivirus program to rule out malware causing the issue.
    [
    ]Update BIOS:
    • Updating the BIOS firmware of your laptop to the latest version can sometimes resolve hardware-related issues.
  2. Reset Windows:
    • If none of the above steps work, you can consider resetting Windows. This will reinstall Windows while keeping your personal files intact. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC.

      Note:

      • Remember to back up important data before making significant changes to your system.
      • If the issue persists, contacting Asus support or a professional technician might be necessary for further assistance.
Try these steps and let me know if you need further help or if any of these methods resolve the issue!
