Windows 7 Need help with windows back up

Hi all.
I would like to know what is the difference between Backup and creating image.
I encountered a strange problem when I wanted to make an image, as well the same problem when I want to make a backup with image. From some reason, windows thinks that drive E is system related, which is defiantly not.
I used backup in windows 7 but this is the first time I encounter it. Drive C and drive E are physically the same drive, but windows never make it a system drive in addition to drive C.

Furthermore, look where I highlighted the text:
Link Removed due to 404 Error

And when I wanted to save that image to upload to this forum I got this error (I don't know if its related):

Link Removed due to 404 Error

Hope you can help me out with this mess.

Thanks.

This is happening because that partition on the hard drive has been formatted to be a "System reserved" disk containing Windows 7 recovery tools, backup the data and re-format that partition so that Windows 7 does not use it as a system partition, if it wont let you delete it from within Windows 7 use the Windows 7 DVD to delete the partition.

I didn't quite understand. Drive N is my external HD, but it also contains tons of information of my work so I can't simply format it.
there must be another way to let windows 7 understand that my backup drive (N) is not system related.

Do you use the external drive to boot to anything? If not, does the partition show active.

If might help if you would attach a snipping tool picture of your Disk Management Window. It is in Administrative tools, or type diskmgmt.msc in the seach box on the start menu. It would be good if the partitions had labels.

I don't use the external drive to boot anything at all.

I did not seem to have that problem with making an image. It looked at the primary/system partition and made an image of that. As JackHayward mentioned, your external drive shows as "system" which is a little unusual. It does not show that in the disk Management window, so I do not know why creating an image would think the external drive is necessary. But check for hidden system files and see if any of the boot files are on the external drive, like bootmgr or a boot folder. Have you ever tried to make the external drive a bootable drive?

What type of connection is your external drive, usb or firewire, or eSATA?

As far as a backup, yes it will attempt to backup all the information on the external drive as well as everything else. You can click on customize during the backup and unselect the external drive and whatever else you may not want.

I have never tried to make my external HD bootable.
It is USB connection.
I'll check for hidden files but I don't believe it will work.

Here's a screenshot of hidden files and system files:

I ran the command SFC /SCANNOW as administrator and also I ran the same command when I logged into my administrator user - a real admin user. I read how to enable the admin user in windows 7.
In both cases I got this message and I do believe that there's something bad with my system and I hope you could help me to sort it out:

Thanks.

Edit: I was thinking the last drive shown in the backup was you external drive, which it is not. So any previous questions should have been directed at that drive, not the external. It still could show up as system even though it does not in Disk Management. So check there for the boot files.

Can you open the cbs.log and copy the last section to notepad and attach? To read it, you may have to copy it to your desktop.

I don't think it has personal information in it, but you might check. I don't know if it will help, but we can try...

If we can't you might think about doing a repair install.

This is mine using an external drive:

I didn't know from which part to copy from the cbs.log file. But here goes:
Also, I was thinking to change the external drive letter to something else and maybe "fool" windows and use the backup & image then.
How do I use the repair install of windows 7?

Here's an image of my hidden files and system files on drive E:

Link Removed due to 404 Error

I'd like to repeat my issue.
1. I'm trying to make a backup and image of drive C: onto my external drive N: but from some reason, windows thinks that drive E: also has system files and it wants to make an image of that too.
Drive C: and Drive E: are the same physical drives.

2. In addition I get an error message when I try to save files like JPG from snipping tool, that states that I need admin rights to save this file. It doesn't happen all the time but clearly there's an issue with my system. I ran the sfc /scannow command and it did say that I have some files that it wasn't able to replace.

In conclusion, can make system image properly. Get admin rights error message occasionally. Have some issues that can't be fixed with sfc /scannow

Thanks.

I am going to say, that doing a repair install would probably be your best bet right now. A repair install in basically an inplace upgrade starting from within the Win 7 install. It will keep all your programs and data.

The log you posted showed the file iassdo.dll and its backup are corrupted. I can't find out exactly what it does, but it seems to be associated with internet connections, or something similar. I wish I could tell you how to restore it, but it might not help anyway. But if you do replace it, you should probably replace the iassdo.dll.mui, which is the backup.

One other thing you might try, is to remove the drive letter from the E: partition. Maybe Windows would not see it any more. You could add it back later. To do this open Disk Management and right click the partition and Drive letters and remove. Since this partition is not a booting partition, it should not hurt. But to be safe, put the letter back before you reboot.

I did what you said but it didn't help. the system still tries to make an image using the E: partition regardless of its letter.
How do I use the repair install? What's the catch?

The repair install is just running an upgrade from within Win 7. Drop in the install DVD and start the upgrade from there. You do not choose custom in this case but upgrade. It should restore any problems with your system while keeping all the programs and settings.

The catches might be, it will not affect the partition that seems to be marked as system. I suppose there is no way to backup the data there and delete and recreate that partition? May not help if problem is in the basic Win 7 install.

I do not know if you will have to reactivate, but I would assume you will.

Files and logs might be left over, which you can get rid of using Disk Cleanup when you are done with them.

It may be for the best. Backing up a faulty install could lead to more problems later.

Should I use this tutorial?
Repair Install - Windows 7 Forums

I tried to run the repair install but I got a strange error message:

  • [*] You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings.

[*] 32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc.

Upgrading Windows will affect the following devices and/or programs:
  • These devices might not work properly after the upgrade. Before upgrading, we recommend updating the drivers for these devices. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers", or go to the device manufacturer's website to search for updated drivers.

  • Storage controllers: ATIZTMDL IDE Controller

I clearly have 64bit windows ultimate edition.

And do you know why do I get this error message?
