Just installed windows 7 on a spare laptop hard drive I had. Installation went fine, got suspicious when windows update didnt do anything after 15 minutes of looking for updates. Loaded IE and no sites would load.

If I put ping google.com into cmd, it pings fine...

Any ideas?

Cheers

Laptop is connectd via ethernet to router

clearly a firewall issue. turn off windows firewall for testing purposes and make sure you do not have any other firewalls installed!
seems strange though because normally the windows firewall automatically allows windows programs to connect to the internet.
if it works with all firewalls disabled you can re-enable windows-firewall. after that explicitly allow ieexplorer.exe to connect to the internet (control panel -> security) and test again.

if it doesn't work please post what your network center reports (if it says connected locally, connected to the internet etc.)
