Windows 7 NVIDIA 9800 GTX BOSD when playing Starcraft 2

Hi Guys/Girls

I have never had problems with my graphics card in the 2 ish years i have been running it, with top games etc. However just recently i have been having issues. I am playing Starcraft 2 and the game area starts to do like a pinstripe colour which moves around the game area. Then after a minute or so the computer either goes to a blue screen or goes completely unviewable and eventually black.

The strange thing is when the problem first happens it only happens to the game area, not the HUD or any other menus in the game.

My computer is as follows (taken from CPUZ)

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
MOBO ASUSTeK P5N-D
8GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia 9800 GTX Graphics Card (512MB)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit now on SP1 (Clean install to try and resolve the issue since 1 week ago) Issue remains
I have 2 monitors, 24inch HD LG and 20Inch Fullscreen DELL

Please help me to resolve this problem, as i have only noticed it since the start of August :( and i love my computer :D I never have this issue outside of the game, and i can normally play the game for about an hour before it happens

PS: I have got all the latest windows updates, i am free of viruses, i have previously tried to rollback my driver version for the graphics but with no success

I am now on a clean install on a 60GB SSD with my main data on 500gb HD. So the problems i do not think are driver based. My G Card is running between 69-76 C when normal pc use. In game it goes from 80-100 C intermittently

Is your GPU clean? i.e. No dust bunnies. I only ask because my ATI card hovers around 42°c idle and I've never had it above 55°c, but then I only push it when 3d'ing in Photoshop.

Hi,

Yeah its pretty free of Dust but has always been pretty hot. My CPU cores run around 40-50 degrees C. Just my bedroom is quite small and not perfectly ventilated so i guess it may be a bit higher.

I have just opened my case and it went down by 3 degrees in 45 mins with the window open so i think that may be its operating temperature (Not a hardware guy though so i wouldnt know :D)

@Kaos, I have attached the log thing that that created :) will attach CPUZ Screenshots next

I did also add the thing you requested Kaos but looks like a moderator needs to approve it before it shows up

and finally

Thanks Kaos :)

My windows is up to date and on the most recent SP 1. My Sound Card, Wireless cards are up to date according to Device Manager. So was my graphics card (but the NVIDIA Website said there was an update. So i am downloading and trying this update now.

I think i recall having tried this new version before my clean install, but we will see :)

the second thing you had in that list there (ASACPI) seems from a google search to be my motherboard.

I have located this: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download P5N-Do you know which things i should download from there? as i would know nothing more than to download it all :p

Hi,

Yeah its pretty free of Dust but has always been pretty hot. My CPU cores run around 40-50 degrees C. Just my bedroom is quite small and not perfectly ventilated so i guess it may be a bit higher

OK Dude. I understand what you're saying. My PC happens to be in the front room next to an open window come sun, rain, sleet, snow frost. (Fresh air Dudes us in the Northern territories of England) Environmentals have an effect.

you will need to go on the manufacturers website and check for updates for each driver, realteks website etc. device manger is waste of time to be honest

As a Priority:

ASACPI.sys Mon Mar 28 03:30:36 2005 This driver is notorious for causing BSOD's. You have two options:
  • You can disable the ATK0110 ACPI Utility in the DeviceManager (under System Devices) with no apparent issues. OR (and if disabling does cause issues)
  • There is an update here: Asus ATK0110 driver. Look under the sub-heading: Utilities. Approx. 12th one down.
Driver Install - Manual method
  1. Download the driver and extract it to a folder.
  2. Open the Device Manager.
  3. Right click the device you wish to change the drivers for. You can select Properties > Driver > Driver Details to check you have the right device. In this case System Devices >> ATK0110 ACPI Utility
  4. Choose Update Driver Software.
  5. Select Browse My Computer For Driver Software.
  6. Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
  7. Select Have disk...
  8. Select Browse..
  9. Navigate to the extracted folder and double click on the .inf file
  10. Hit OK, then Next and the driver(s) will then begin to install.
  11. After it has installed, GoTo C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. Locate the Asacpi.sys driver, right click it and check the dates under its properties. You're looking for a "Modified" date of 2009 or 2010. Occasionally it can be a bit stubborn to change.

RimSerial_AMD64.sys Mon Nov 24 17:01:01 2008 Link Removed - Invalid URL. If unable to update, uninstall the software. It's obsolete as far as Windows 7 is concerned.

Thanks Guys :)

SO far i have updated my graphics driver, my sound card and my ethernet driver. I am going to give it a run tonight to see if the problem is still resolved. If the problem isnt resolved i will try the installation Elmer has suggested with ACPI (as my device manager option for disabling this is not clickable (greyed out/disabled etc).

I am hopeful that the sound car install may have helped if this is built into the MOBO as i do recall that when my screen went funny once there was a fuzzing sound for a minute or too before the BSOD.

I will report back if successful :)

I took a picture of the BSOD with my phone, but its terrible quality; hardly read anything, and its hardly there for anytime at all

Does anybody have any ideas?

Until you update the ASACPI driver, you'll continually have problems. Get the download I gave you and follow my instructions for installing it.

STOP 0x00000116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
Usual causes:
Video driver, overheating, bad video card, ?BIOS, ?Power to card.

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception.

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash. As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds. If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating. Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU. Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference. If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling." - H2SO4
