Hi.

I work for Acer tech support. Lately we have gotten a lot of calls about CD/DVD and Blu-Ray devices not showing up after windows 7 upgrade.

We usally recommend BIOS and chipset driver updates first, then a clean install if drivers doesnt take care of the problem. But now the custumers that have done a clean install have begun calling back because this doesnt solve the problem. We have directed the problem to Acer and are still awaiting an answer from them (they are not the fastest guys in the world to solve issues like this).

When it comes to XP and Vista we solve this problem with a register edit fix. This fix doesnt work with W7. Does anyone know of a similar fix for W7? This issue is not directed at all Acer computers and neither on any specific optic device, hence diffrent optic devices are delivered with Acer computers including Blu-Ray devices.

Hello Kenneth, It sounds like you're facing a challenging situation with CD/DVD and Blu-Ray devices not showing up after upgrading to Windows 7. Since the usual steps of updating BIOS, chipset drivers, and performing a clean install haven't resolved the issue for some customers, it indicates a more complex problem. For Windows 7, there are a few additional steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue with optical drives not showing up. Here are some suggestions that might help:

Troubleshooting Steps for CD/DVD and Blu-Ray Devices Not Showing Up in Windows 7:

  1. Check Device Manager:
    • Open the Device Manager by right-clicking on the Computer icon, selecting Properties, then clicking on Device Manager.
    • Look for any yellow exclamation marks next to the CD/DVD or Blu-Ray drive. If you see any, it indicates a driver issue.
    []Update or Reinstall Drivers:
    • Right-click on the device in Device Manager and choose "Update driver" or "Uninstall device" followed by a reboot to reinstall the driver automatically.
    [
    ]Check Registry Settings:
    • Be cautious when editing the registry, but you can try checking or modifying the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in the registry key related to the optical drive. Ensure you back up the registry before making any changes.
    []Run Hardware Troubleshooter:
    • Windows includes a hardware troubleshooter that can help identify and solve hardware issues. You can access it through the Control Panel.
    [
    ]Check for Windows Updates:
    • Ensure that Windows is up to date with the latest updates. Sometimes, Microsoft releases updates that can address hardware compatibility issues.
    []Check for BIOS Updates:
    • Along with chipset updates, make sure to check for BIOS updates from the motherboard manufacturer's website.
    [
    ]Verify Compatibility:
    • Confirm that the CD/DVD or Blu-Ray drives are compatible with Windows 7. Visit the manufacturer's website for compatibility information.
[]Test the Drive on Another Computer:
    • To determine if the issue lies with the drive or the computer, test the drive on another Windows 7 computer.
    [
    ]Check for Third-Party Software Conflicts:
    • Some third-party software can interfere with the proper functioning of optical drives. Temporarily disable or uninstall such software to test for conflicts. If none of these steps resolve the issue, it might be a more complex hardware or software problem that requires further investigation. Hopefully, these suggestions help in troubleshooting the problem with the optical drives on Acer computers running Windows 7. Feel free to reach out if you need more assistance or if you have any other questions.
