Windows 8 PC only powers on from sleep

I was running Windows 7 for a long time with no problem. It would sleep and wake up just fine. One day, it would not go to sleep any more. I never got to fix it before upgrading to Windows 8.

After upgrading, the system still would not go to sleep. I did some research and basically found using the Powercfg command tells me what devices are requesting power, and updating drivers.

I was able to finally get my system to go to sleep again, but now when it wakes up, it only powers on. It does not seem to POST, so it does not appear to spin up any of the hard drives or get anywhere close to booting the OS.

Any ideas what else I can check? My system was designed for Vista, but ran just fine with Windows 7. I don't know if there are Windows 8 drivers for any of the motherboard components. It is a HP Paviliion Elite m9000t.

Thanks in advance!

Are you able to get into Windows? If so, please provide these reports (even though you're not seeing BSOD's): http://windows8forums.com/windows-8-errors-bsods/11837-how-ask-help-bsod.html

If not able to get into Windows 8, I have to suspect that the system doesn't support Win8 (I have a Lenovo tablet that's in the same situation). I can install Win8, but it has problems with everything that I try to do. Have you run the Upgrade Assistant for Windows 8?

The first thing to look into is the BIOS and any updates that might be available for it. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.
