Windows Vista Problems with windows 7 upgrade and messenger with mozilla or internet explorer

i was wondering if anyone can help. i recently upgraded to windows 7 and then i discovered there are problem. the most fustrating one is that when i start windows live messenger and internet explorer or mozilla, my laptop slows down. Even though I can move my cursor around whenever i click on an icon or programme it takes forever to load and then i end up restarting my laptop. Is there a clash between the programmes because if I use messenger only, it works fine. as soon as I click on explorer or mozilla, it starts to hang again. of course vice versa.
can anyone help?

You may want to re-upgrade it this way:

1. Back up your files and folders
2. Format the partition and clean install windows
3. Activate windows
4. Do not install any drivers or software !
5. Run the upgrade and follow the instructions
6. Activate 7
7. Install 7 compatible drivers and software
