Windows 8 Secure web pages blocked

I am running IE 11 and the latest Firefox.
Neither browser will open secure web pages...anything with https won't open. That includes google searches and gmail.
Other computers on my network are fine, but I restored the router to original settings anyway.
I did a system restore to about 3 weeks ago.
I even disabled the firewall briefly and tried to open secure sites but no luck. (restored firewall again)
Normal pages open fine.
I am at a loss.

A proxy server would give this effect.
Grrrrr.....I connect directly to my modem (take out the wireless router) and it works fine.
But as I mentioned I reset the router back to factory settings, and all other computers seem to work fine.
Would anything in my wireless network setting cause this ? I'm not using any kind of proxy.

Yes there are lots of default security settings that can do that… the most likely is the router (or your computer) sees the wifi as being unsecured and is helpfully blocking part of it for you.

1. Test if the issue is coming from the router settings or your system… i.e. take the computer to a mates home and see if you get https pages to open when connecting to his wifi… my guess is yes.

2. Assumes 1 = yes… make and model of your router please.

3. Most good routers allow two types of accounts i.e. admin and guest… is your one assigning wifi connections to the guest account?

Well I don't know what to tell you. This morning I set up another wifi connection with my android phone and I had access to secure sites with no problem. So I reconnected to my router and I have access there now too. So I don't know what happened, or how the problem resolved itself. If it happens again I'll come back to this thread rather than start another one.
I appreciate the help.

Bob
