Windows 7 "Skype for Business" Bug

Hi.
For some unknown reason "Skype for Business" or so it says it is, has installed itself
on my computer. The first thing I did was just try to close the window.
This software will not allow that...it just starts up again. I tried uninstalling
Skype, and deleting all mention of Skype for Business from the registry.

It makes no difference. Skype for Business still comes up automatically on
log in and stays until you kill it with the Windows Task Manager.

Anyone know how to squash this bug? It's obviously some kind of malware.

Thanks,
Tara

Well, is anyone prepared to answer I am an idiot, or offer some constructive advice?
I am beginning to gather that I may be able to disengage this "feature"..but it still
feels like a "bug".
Thanks,

Hi Tara,

Could you please provide the following info?
- What's the process name in taskmgr? (lync.exe or lync.exe *32 is the process name for S4B).
- Please check the autostart in the registry to see if it points to S4B:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
&
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
- Check the system configuration --> startup for Lync
Start --> Run (Windows key + R) --> msconfig --> Startup tab --> Check to which command the MS Lync startup item points.

Thank you so much for helping me get rid of the offending item. The first tip,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
proved to be the solution.

Didn't find anything in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or in the msconfig Startup tab.

I have two questions.
1. As you suggested, I checked the process listing (before solving the problem)
and sure enough, lync.exe was running. Searching the C drive, this .exe is no
where to be found. Where the heck is this process stored?
2. How did lync.exe get installed on my machine in the first place, and set up
to automatically start on boot up?

This may never get solved, but would love to know.

Thank you again, so very much.

Tara

Hi Tara,

Good to hear it has been resolved by deleting the registry key.
To find the location of the .exe you actually should have check the value of key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Because this key has been deleted it will be harder to identify the location of the .exe.

What version of Office do you have installed on your machine? If it is 2013 the .exe might be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15. Where 15 represents the version of office. So if you have 2010 installed it would be version 14, 2007 is 12, etc.

You might want to check if KB2889923 is installed on your machine. This is an upgrade for Lync 2013 to S4B whihc has been issued on 15-04-2015. If that's not the case you should consider if it is worth looking into how and why S4B got installed as it probably will require (some) serious looking into.
