Windows 7 Sleep/Wake not an answered question

Hello,

I just updated from Vista 64 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. Everything worked fine for the first couple of weeks and then things began to act funny. I'm not a computer wizard so I'm turning to you for help. Here is my situation.

I normally leave my computer on and only turn it off when it tells me it needs to shut down for updates or something. A few nights ago the computer went into sleep mode and when I woke up I moved the mouse and my monitor comes on and then goes black. Nothing I do will wake it up. I push the sleep button on my computer and the system goes back to sleep but when I wake it up again, my monitor wakes and then falls right back to sleep. The only way around this is to do a hard restart.

I've followed the thread of others who are having the same problems with wake/sleep issues and none of the solutions given have worked for me.

I did a test last night and decided to disable the sleep, Hybrid and all sleep functions on my computer. As I called it a night, I shut off my monitor and went to bed. When I woke up this morning, I could hear that the CPU was still running and the programs in the background was still running because my email alert was sounding each time I received a new email message. So I turned on my monitor and it woke up and went right back to sleep. I put it in sleep mode with the keyboard and it did the same thing. I had to do a hard restart.

I'm at a lost here as this is something that is new that started recently. Please help if you have figured out how to solve this problem.

Did you perform an upgrade to Windows 7 or did you do a clean install?
An upgrade could be the cause of your problems.

Mine does the same thing. I did a clean install. This is a bug in Win7. There are a lot of threads here about this problem in one form or another. Disable sleep and hibernation and you won't have the problem. Wait til M$ fixes it.

LPC,
Have you checked to see what updates have been downloaded in the past few weeks as you were not having this problem initially?
You specified that all drivers have been updated -- does this include your ACPI and Chipset drivers as well?
Also, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here Windows 7 Category . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to also check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback.

Good call Drew. You can disable sleep all together by going to Control panrl > Power Optioms, advanced power options and set everything to never.

I had the same problem- windows 7 issue

I got a new computer for Christmas and my computer would not wake up , talked to Dell support twice, on the 2nd try they put it to Never shut down and said that is a known issue with Windows 7- hopefully they
will get a fix forit since others are having this problem also

Update your system regularly via windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and also:

Windows 7 does not wake up from sleep - Super User

Ideas for resolving not coming out of sleep:

1. Look in your BIOS for the suspend ACPI options and try to switch modes among "S1 and S3", "S3" etc.
2. Ensure "Allow this device to wake computer" is checked in in "Device Manager/$device$/ Properties/Power Management", where $device$ stands for keyboard and mouse.
3. Turn off Hybrid sleep, see explanation here (for vista, but is the same)
4. The hibernation file is sometimes disabled by disk cleaning, to restore do in cmd run as administrator "powercfg -h on".

You can use the following command to troubleshoot sleep problems and return a detailed report:

powercfg -ENERGY
