Windows 7 Speaker sound way too soft

The answer is probably very simple but here goes: I plugged my speakers (1/8" stereo jack) into the headphone outlet. Can hardly hear the sound. How do I get decent volume out of this system?

Ok, let's see... is this a laptop? What model and make are your speakers? How old are they? Try them on a different computer. Try a different set of speakers on YOUR computer.
