Is this the new Win8 Start Button? http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww213/LaurieLou04/online/start_button_zps35df3273.jpg

The reason I ask is because when I got Win8 (before the upgrade that had a Start button), I installed some app or something that gave me a start button.

Then, I recently got the very large upgrade which included a start button. I tried to get rid of the app one but I think I might have gotten rid of the wrong one.

If this is not the new Start button that come on the Win8 upgrade... would anyone know how I get it back? (& get rid of this lol.. I have no idea what it was called, in order to delete)

TIA

So........ if this

IS the new start button, it isn't working very well. I usually can't click on it to get it to work.

I wonder where one can go to find out such things?

Thanks, good to know it is. By not working well I mean if I click it.. nothing happens. It's not working very well

It is supposed to return you to the modern UI. Has it ever worked? What was the app you installed to supposedly give you a start button?

The app.. hack is probably a better word. I uninstalled it when this update came from MS. Not sure if this ever worked. I did just find something out.. if I hit the windows key, it brings up the Start menu I was expecting to see when I click it. So maybe I have to hit the windows key instead of click the little window?

OK so at least I Finally figured out how to get it working .. just not how I expected

Hi

If you do want a real start button back, run Classic Shell.

It's free, I've used it for years to replace the start UI in Windows 7 even before I had Windows 8, it works and you can turn it on and off whenever you want to.

It does a lot more then just replace the start button, and you can download and install it in 5 minutes.
Check out their web page.

I think you had "Startisback". In the early preview release of Windows 8, the start menu code was left in, but did not show the menu on the desktop. The programmers who came up with Startisback, uncovered it and made it operational again. It was, without doubt, the best solution at the time, as it used no resources.
In the RTM, the code had been removed by Microsoft. Startisback is still available but now uses more conventional methods.

You have to right click onto it, then you'll see what options it offers. Logoff, shutdown & restart are among the functions, but there's several more options there.
