Having had so much help from this forum already to kick BSOD's into touch by updating the vast majority of drivers and removing the dodgy hardware and software, my PC still refuses to behave.

The problem is still Kernel Event 41 caused by a bad shutdown or worse. They've occurred at start up on the 6th,7th,12th & 15th Oct.

I can't attach the most recent minidumps, event files and driver list as I appear to have reached my 10Mb upload limit.

any advice welcome, even that which includes the use of a large hammer!!

regards and thanks

Pete

Solution
Hello Pete,

1. Check if the Power Supply Unit is sufficient and in working order.

2. Ensure that the hardware is properly connected with recommended bios settings

3. Test the hardware with bootable media:

Link Removed - Invalid URL

RAM - Test with Memtest86+ - Windows 7 Forums

4. Do a clean install

5. Try what's outlined here:

Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try - Windows 7 Forums

6. Upgrade Bios if haven't done so yet

7. You can submit the dumps via an upload server such as rapidshare.com

Have you checked for updates for the nForce drivers?

nvraid.sys Wed May 20 09:43:36 2009
nvrd32.sys Wed Aug 05 03:28:19 2009
NVIDIA nForce(TM) RAID Driver

nvsmu.sys Mon Jun 29 10:36:34 2009

nvstor.sys Wed May 20 09:44:09 2009
nvstor32.sys Wed Aug 05 03:27:05 2009
NVIDIA nForce(TM) SATA Driver

BIOS upgrade is not an option, as you have it latest already. You may want to switch SATA controller mode to AHCI, see if it behaves any better. (You'll have to reinstall Windows after switching modes)

KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: 830ccf74, The address that the exception occurred at
Arg3: 91fa808c, Trap Frame
Arg4: 00000000

Thanks Cybercore.

The Nvidia RAID drivers are the latest from the ASUS site. I can't get close to RAID drivers on Nvidia's site, it's most unhelpful.

The cabling is that which came in the box. It's been clamped up with cable ties though is tied shorter than I would do. I have more cables and will have a switch around.

For the sake of £50 for a new single 1TB drive I could ditch RAID entirely which may get shot of the problem. OK, I know it's a clean install and a shed load of updates, but if it cures the woes, what the hell.

Should I switch to AHCI whatever I do?

There other errors in the event files from time to time (nothing serious) which perhaps suggests that after 11 months of BSOD's the OS is feeling a bit fragile. Perhaps a clean install is for the best.

best wishes

Pete

Did your PC ever crash during OS installation? If it never did then a chance it's a bad driver.

1. The Nvidia RAID drivers are the latest from the ASUS site.

Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Can you try those from NVidia site? What is your motherboard model?

2. Should I switch to AHCI whatever I do?

In this case you'll have to reinstall Windows, it won't boot when switched from RAID to AHCI. The idea was to see if your hdd controller would handle AHCI any better than RAID, but frankly I bet it's gonna be the same. So it's up to you.

I think you need a new motherboard, I don't know, like borrow it from someone - lol. Try reflashing bios as well.

Two installs;first at the shop when built 13 months ago and second in May this year when I did a clean install. Quickest easiest install I've ever seen! Certainly no crashes. I did use Windows easy transfer to get all my settings back. Could I have simply brought in corrupt system data from the original install by doing that?

1. Asus M4N78 Current download at Asus is Nvidia sata raid V111033 Sept 09

2. I doubt I can find anyone with a board going spare. I have a P4 Intel xp machine that's doing nothing. The graphics card isn't compatible but the on board might get away with it.

I have a feeling that it just doesn't like being switched right off. I'm sure that on the occasions I have, it has always BSOD'd at start up. The ironic thing is that once up and running it never has crashed during use.

Best wishes

Pete

M4N78 is nForce 720D, I can't find anything for 720D but I found one for 720I - which is 2009.10.01, so yours is indeed the latest possible.
(NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.49 WHQL)

2. This motherboard model certainly predated the release of Windows 7, so I would install XP to test: if it still BSOD'd on XP with the same raid error - that would mean faulty cabling, faulty SATA, or faulty motherboard you need to reflash or replace. If it crashes on XP as well, test the system with only one SATA connected, of course you'll need to reinstall the OS once again.

Thanks for your advice. Board is supposed to be compatible

I'll go for a new drive & cables first. I want to ditch raid anyway. If that fails I'll just get a new m/board.

Can't be doing with testing one OS then the other life's too short.

Many thanks for your help

Hi all,

Since opening the box and pushing all the drive connectors home, BSOD every morning since. I changed the SATA cables this morning using the ones out of the BSOD free XP machine.

Files attached, read and weep!

New 1TB drive arrived yesteday. will save files and settings via easy transfer unless that's a bad idea, remove the the raid drives as they are and install the single under SATA on Monday.

I only have 2 DVD writers 1 SATA, 1 IDE (could leave one unconnected for the moment). Also USB card reader & front USB port.

Only other things connected are GForce 9500 video card, Printer on LPT1 & USB printer.

System isn't overclocked or anything fancy.

My other machine - drivers and BIOS are way out of date and yet it ticks along happily on an older motherboard!

Any final thought before surgery (other than borrow a motherboard!)

regards

Pete

Hi Torrent,

Thanks. It looks like 1 & 2 are recent versions. Will update.

I'm already running chipset 15.49 downloaded 21/10/10, I don't there is are newer drivers within it.

I'm beginning to think there is a hardware problem. It was fine until I powered down the motherboard 4 days ago to check the cables!

Thought.

At build delivery was delayed because 1 stick of RAM was faulty. is the replacement faulty or were both originals?

I have 2 x 2Gb sticks. How about I remove one stick and see what happens. If problems continue, swap them.

What's the chance of two sticks from seperate batches being duff?

regards

Pete

the two sticks, though probably identical have different codes; VData VD2800002GOU and VData VD2U800B2G5-B.

Have asked ADATA to confirm they are the same.

Having googled them, it appears that the VD2U800 is available in the UK, the VD28000 isn't

Any thoughts?

regards

Pete

You did right to ask ADATA, they'll give you a more precise answer for their products. I can tell you they look and should be the same, but I'm not 100% sure. I always buy them from the same batch.

This is a good idea:

-> I have 2 x 2Gb sticks. How about I remove one stick and see what happens. If problems continue, swap them.

Well yes!

Now here's a poser; Win 7 32 bit can only use 3Gb and I have 4Gb. Is the unused RAM spread over both DIMMS or confined to one. And if only 3Gb is used by 32 bit, is only 3Gb tested using memtest.

Regards

pete

So far so good!

1 stick VD28000 RAM sitting in antistatic bag, GeForce & realtek drivers updated.

1 stick VD2U800 in channel A

And even though I powered down the mother board (which it has always hated) not a BSOD in sight after 3 restarts.

I think someone will say "I told you so"!

But for getting rid of errors from:

MMSE OOBE has stopped working
ReadyBoot has stopped working
nvrd32.sys the driver detected a controller error on (it never list a drive)

My event viewer would be empty. These 3 are all day every day.

If I dare assume RAM was my problem (it's early days) Is it worth reinstalling the chipset & RAID drivers in case dodgy RAM upset them during install?

Best wishes and yet more thanks

Pete

You are celebrating too early, Pete, so far it's been smooth for 57 minutes maximum. When the RAM proves good, then take care of the drivers.
