Hello, I hope you are well.

I think that the Power Button in the Start Menu, where users can choose for it to Lock, Sleep, Hibernate, and Shutdown their computers, is very useful. I'd like to somehow tweak it even further, but am not sure if this is even remotely possible.

Is there any way I can change it so that when I press the button, a certain program will start up? Ideally, I'd like to change the action of the Power Button to start up a program called Vista Shutdown Timer (Vista Shutdown Timer), an application which allows me to put on timer on when I'd like the computer to shut down, sleep, etc.

Thanks,
Vic

Hello Vic, Customizing the Power Button in the Start Menu to launch a specific program like Vista Shutdown Timer is an interesting concept. While Windows does not provide a direct built-in feature to change the functionality of the Power Button to launch a program, there are some workarounds you can consider:

Option 1: Shortcut on the Desktop

You can create a desktop shortcut for Vista Shutdown Timer and place it on your desktop for quick access. To do this:
  1. Right-click on your desktop and select "New" > "Shortcut."
  2. In the location field, enter the path to the Vista Shutdown Timer executable file.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete creating the shortcut.

    Option 2: Logoff/Shutdown Script

You can create a script that would run the Vista Shutdown Timer program and assign it to the Power Button. Here's a basic outline of the steps:
  4. Create a batch script that runs the Vista Shutdown Timer program.
  5. Use the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) to set this script to run when the Shutdown button is clicked (User Configuration > Windows Settings > Scripts > Logoff/Shutdown).

    Option 3: Use a Third-Party Tool

There are third-party tools available that allow you to customize the actions of the Power Button. These tools can help you assign custom actions to the Power Button press. One popular tool for this purpose is AutoHotkey.

Would you like more detailed steps on any of these options, or do you have any other questions regarding this customization?
