Why are jump list thumbnails not updated when the program or window is minimized and is their a way to have it do so?

Solution
Jump lists in Windows show thumbnails of recently opened files or pinned items related to a specific program. These thumbnails are typically updated when the program or window is active or in focus. However, in some cases, the thumbnails may not update when the program or window is minimized. One common reason for this behavior is that Windows prioritizes the active or focused window for rendering and updating, which means that the thumbnails of minimized windows might not get updated immediately. This behavior is to optimize system resources and ensure smooth performance for the active tasks. Unfortunately, there is no built-in option in Windows to force jump list thumbnails to update when a program or window is minimized. However, there are a few workarounds you can try to potentially trigger an update:

Workarounds to Refresh Jump List Thumbnails:

  1. Restore and Minimize: Try restoring the program window from the taskbar (by clicking on it), then immediately minimizing it again. This action can sometimes trigger a refresh of the thumbnails.
  2. Use Keyboard Shortcuts: Use keyboard shortcuts to switch between running programs. Press Alt + Tab to cycle through open applications. This may force Windows to update the thumbnails.
  3. Manual Refresh: Occasionally resizing the program window or switching between tabs/documents within the program may prompt Windows to update the thumbnails.

    Third-Party Solutions:

There might be third-party software or utilities available that offer more control over jump list behavior, including refreshing thumbnails, but it's important to ensure the software is from a reputable source before installing it.

    Additional Notes:

    • Timeline Feature: Windows 10 introduced the Timeline feature, allowing users to review past activities and documents. This feature may provide an alternative way to access recent items without solely relying on jump list thumbnails. While these workarounds may help in some cases, it's important to note that there's no guaranteed solution within Windows itself to force jump list thumbnails to update when a program or window is minimized.
