My External HDD (vosonic vp8390) stop working during coping files.
It still shows in the My computer but EMPTY (can open it but there is no folders).
It shows in disk management as RAW disk.( like it is new and unformatted)
and the most weird thing is - it will still show that way if i UNPLUG it! (until restart of the PC)

this ex-HDD was (and is) working fine in Vista using the same usb cable and slots (2 of them, for additional power. But it is working even with one slot, just not recharging fast enough. recharging - because it is also a media-player).
after restart - all is fine until i try to move some files to it again. (it is not 100% reproducible, it happens 3 times out of..may be 10)

Windows 7 RTM
phenom II 940, Asus m3n-HD-HDMI, 8gb 800(CL4) Kindston, GTX260, seagates (.10, .11)

Solution
It seems like your external HDD (Vosonic VP8390) is encountering issues, displaying as RAW and empty in Disk Management, even after unplugging and restarting your PC. This behavior can be concerning but can potentially be resolved. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially recover the data on your external HDD:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Data Recovery Software: Consider using data recovery software like Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, or TestDisk to attempt to recover your files from the RAW disk before proceeding with any other steps.
  2. Check the USB Cable and Ports: Ensure that the USB cable and ports are not faulty. Try using a different USB cable or connecting the external HDD to a...

Try using a different USB cable or connecting the external HDD to a different USB port on your computer.
  3. Power Source: If your external HDD requires additional power slots, ensure that it is receiving sufficient power. Check the power adapter and the cables for any issues.
  4. Initialize the Disk: If the disk is showing as RAW in Disk Management, you may need to initialize the disk. However, be cautious as initializing the disk will erase all data on it.
  5. Format the Disk: Once initialized, you can proceed to format the disk. Formatting will erase all data, so only do this if you have recovered your important files or have backups.
  6. Update or Reinstall USB Drivers: Ensure that your USB drivers are up to date. You can try reinstalling the USB drivers to see if that resolves the issue.
  7. Disk Check: Run a disk check utility like CHKDSK to scan and fix any errors on the external HDD. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command: chkdsk /f X: (replace X with the drive letter of your external HDD).
  8. Check for Hardware Issues: If none of the above steps work, there might be a hardware issue with the external HDD itself. In such cases, consider contacting a professional data recovery service.

    Update for Windows 7 RTM:

Given that you are using Windows 7 RTM, it's important to note that this version is quite old and may lack certain features and updates that could potentially help in troubleshooting modern issues. Consider upgrading to a newer version of Windows for better compatibility and security updates. Feel free to try these steps and let me know if you need further assistance or if you encounter any specific issues during the process.
