I am trying to set up Wake on LAN. My problem is that I keep losing power to my NIC when I shutdown the PC. If I hibernate, I can wake it up. But I want to shut the PC down totally, not hibernate. All the proper BIOS settings are enabled. All the proper NIC settings are enabled. All the power management settings are enabled. I am familiar with magic packet and green ethernet settings. I have configured those settings as well. What can I do to keep the NIC card on. I don't have this issue with XP workstations, only W7.

Solution
To troubleshoot the issue of losing power to your Network Interface Card (NIC) when shutting down your Windows 7 PC, despite having all the proper settings configured, you can try the following steps: 1. Check Power Settings: - Verify the power settings in both Windows 7 and your system's BIOS. Ensure that there are no conflicting settings that might be causing the NIC to lose power during shutdown. 2. Check Device Manager: - Open Device Manager in Windows 7 and locate your NIC. Check the properties of the NIC to ensure that there are no power-saving settings enabled that might be causing the NIC to power off during shutdown. 3. Update NIC Drivers: - Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC installed...

Check the properties of the NIC to ensure that there are no power-saving settings enabled that might be causing the NIC to power off during shutdown. 3. Update NIC Drivers: - Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC installed. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause power management issues. Visit the manufacturer's website to download and install the latest drivers. 4. Disable Power Management for the NIC: - In Device Manager, under the properties of your NIC, disable any power-saving features that may be turning off the NIC during shutdown. 5. Check BIOS Settings: - Double-check the BIOS settings related to power management and wake-on-LAN. Sometimes, there might be additional settings that need to be adjusted for proper functionality. 6. Try Different Shutdown States: - Experiment with different shutdown states like Fast Startup. Fast Startup is a hybrid shutdown mechanism that can sometimes affect wake-on-LAN functionality. 7. Verify ARP Tables: - Check the ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) table on both the sending and receiving devices to ensure that the magic packet is correctly reaching the PC even when it's fully shut down. 8. Use a Dedicated Wake-on-LAN Application: - Consider using a third-party Wake-on-LAN application or software to send the magic packet. These applications sometimes offer more customization and troubleshooting options. 9. Network Adapter Priority: - Check the network adapter priority in your network settings. Make sure the NIC you want to wake up is set as a priority for wake-on-LAN. By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue of your NIC losing power when shutting down your Windows 7 PC. If the issue persists, it might be beneficial to seek further assistance from your system's manufacturer or a network specialist.
