Windows 7 WIFI problems with Linksys

Just wanted to know if anyone else has been having problems remaining connected to a linksys WRT54G or GS or GSL anything of the sort, really. Mine keeps dropping the connection even if i'm 2 ft away. Granted I am using HEAVILY modified router firmwear, but nonetheless... it's a stable release with lots of user support .... i'm using it as a repeater bridge, picking up signal from another router about 500 meters away from me, then connecting via my laptop... any thoughts?
