Windows 7 Win 7 Crashes CPU When Playing Games

I've had this issue ever since switching from XP to 32-bit 7 a few weeks back. When playing games like Dragon Age, Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead, my computer runs smoothly for about 5-10 minutes and then suddenly completely shuts down without warning. Games like CSS and TF2 have outlined 3d boxes and purple/black checkered patterns all over maps. My main concern is that when I was playing on XP, I never had any of these issues. My graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT, which is a bit out-dated. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I figured that it since I switched to 7, it wants to run on a higher Direct X, when in reality I can probably only handle 9. My driver is completely up-to-date so I'm not exactly sure what to do. Can I somehow go back to 9? Is that even what I need to do?

Thanks! :D

I just came to realize that it's only steam engine games that won't run. I run Batman, CoD MW2, AvP demo perfectly fine. I went ahead and opened a ticket via steam.

Not sure what else to do :/
