I second that. Even if it wouldn't be a solution to the problem here, it is an opinion of many, including me, that the best option for Windows updates is to have it inform you about new updates, but let you choose what to install. Off with auto updates, that is.
Sometimes Windows updates go actual when you shut down your computer. There is a specific warning NOT to shut down the computer manually, but to let Windows do it. If you shut down, the update may get "hanging", repeating itself, not able to get through, all the way. Has this happened, I do not know.
If the problem persists, and you can approximately estimate the appearance of the problem, you may try a System Restore to a point before:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Recovery > Open System Restore
Before doing it, I recommend taking off auto updates.
