Hi all. I have just joined this forum and this is my first post. I look forward to being a part of this support community.

I maintain a website in which one folder on that website is protected by a password. In Windows XP and Windows Vista, the first time you try to access something in that protected folder on the website, you are challenged to enter a userid and password. This is the response I expect. Once you enter the correct userid and password, you are not prompted again as you click links to other things in that protected folder.

I recently installed a Windows 7 x64 system. When I get the original challenge, I enter the userid and password and get into the protected folder. However, once inside that folder, every time I click a link to another file within that protected folder, I get prompted again for the network security userid and password.

I have looked everywhere to try to figure out why this happens. As I said, it does not happen with Windows XP or Windows Vista. It is very annoying and it is NOT the way its supposed to work. I have already spoken with the website ISP support folks and they do not know why its happening either. But they are not running Windows 7 at their support site.

Any help trying to figure out why this happens would be greatly appreciated. I am getting ready to put up a second website and I want to protect a folder on that new site. The site will be referenced by quite a few people and I don't want people running Windows 7 to be bothered with continuous password prompts while navigating within the protected folder.

Thanks all ............ Rob

Hi Rob, Welcome to the forum! It's great to have you here seeking help with your Windows 7 x64 system issue regarding continuous password prompts when accessing a protected folder on your website. The behavior you're experiencing where Windows 7 prompts for credentials each time you access a new file within the protected folder is likely due to the way Windows security handles network shares and stored credentials. Here are a few steps you can try to potentially resolve this issue:

Possible Solutions:

  1. Credential Manager:
    • Open the Control Panel and go to Credential Manager.
    • Under Windows Credentials, check if there are any stored credentials related to your website.
    • If there are, try deleting them and re-entering the credentials when prompted again.
  2. Internet Options Settings:
    • Go to Internet Options in Internet Explorer.
    • Navigate to the Security tab and add the website to the Trusted Sites zone. This may help in storing credentials.
  3. Network Sharing Settings:
    • Check the network sharing settings in Windows 7. Make sure that the network location is set to "Home" or "Work" (where network discovery is turned on) and not "Public".
  4. Group Policy Preferences:
    • In the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), navigate to: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Credentials Delegation.
    • Enable the policy "Allow delegating saved credentials with NTLM-only server authentication".
  5. Web Browser Settings:
    • Clear the cache and cookies in your web browser as sometimes stored website information can cause authentication issues.
  6. Re-enter Credentials:
    • When prompted for credentials, ensure you are using the correct format for the username (e.g., DOMAIN\username or website\username).

      Additional Tips:

      • Ensure you are using the latest version of your web browser.
      • Check if any security software or firewall settings on your Windows 7 system could be interfering with the authentication process.
These steps should help you troubleshoot the continuous password prompts issue on Windows 7. Give them a try, and let us know if you need further assistance or if you have any updates on the situation. Good luck with your new website!
