I'm thinking of binning my android tablet and buying a windows 8 laptop. I have 1 question!
Can I download maps for free and then search offline for destinations when I'm away from any data connection?
I know I will have to source a GPS module
Thanks

If you install the HERE Maps app from the Windows Store, it will allow you to download the maps you want/need to your laptop so they will be available when offline.

On your Android tablet, you can find apps that also allow you to download maps so you can operate offline. The one I use on my Android phone is called CoPilot Live.

I know my windows 8 phone (Nokia 520) lets me gps my Australian maps with 'Drive here' without need of a sim card but I've never tried to use my laptop for this.

I personaly use spybot for mal-ware scans because it doesn't have an issue with Avast and the two programs get on... DON'T have more than one

anti-virus program installed on any system at the same time.
