Windows 7 Windows update not working

I would like to do a Windows 7 repair install of my OEM system. I followed a link for a 64 bit oem download but it would open;see below:

"You can do a repair install on a factory OEM installation with the latest official Windows 7 with SP1 ISO file here: Microsoft: Windows 7 Direct Download Links, and use Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool to create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive with the ISO to do the repair install from within Windows 7."

The reason why I want to do this is because windows update doesn't work and I want sp1...
Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have any OEM systems, so not sure exactly what could or could not be done using the downloaded Install DVD.

I suppose you could try repairing your system, but not sure that would help the Windows Update situation. If you wanted to reinstall or to a Repair install, it might depend on how the License key was handled on your system.

As far as Windows update not working, you might copy the WindowsUpdate.log in the Windows folder to you desktop and then copy the last 4 or 5 days of entries and paste into a text file and zip and attach using the paperclip on the advanced replies. Maybe we can find something.

One of the solutions that work for many people is renaming or deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder, also in the Windows folder. Windows update will need to reload all the prior updates and rebuild the system. It does not need to re-install them, however. Hopefully this will clean out data that might be corrupted and keeping the updates from downloading.

But I have seen other reasons for problems, such as network connections, bad system files or some service not running...

Let us know.

I hope this works...i couldn't figure out how to zip it and attach

The included text works fine. But just as a side note, I asked for the last 4 or 5 days and you gave me less than one second!! :)

It may not be necessary to see any more of the log. You can see the system does not seem to be able to access the data store, for some reason. I would suggest you rename or delete the SoftwareDistribution folder in the Windows directory and see what happens. It will take some time for the new data to be rewritten, but your updates should start working again. There are a couple of other solutions we might try if they do not.

As to why it can't access the information, not really sure. I suppose some anti-virus could block access or possible corruption in the store itself.. No way for me to know at the present time.

You zip a text file by right clicking on it and selecting Send to - Compressed. After you have the text file or .zip file, use the paperclip on the advanced replies page and browse for the file and upload it. I may not need any more of your log, we will have to wait to see what happens when you delete the folder mentioned.

Thanks again...When I try to rename the folder, I get this error: "Action cannot be completed because the folder is open or a file in it is open. Close the folder and try again"
I have nothing open but Explorer to find the folder. BTW, there is also and folder already there named "software distribution.old" I was naming the other one .old2
I am attaching the earlier request zipped as well as another zipped file notepad within the software distribution folder called "reporting events"

It is interesting you cannot rename the folder, although I was not aware you had already tried that..... Perhaps something from Windows Update is currently trying to access it, or maybe something else.

Have you done any cold boots (complete shutdown and then restart) on your system? If you renamed the folder mentioned, I would suggest restarting and cold booting occasionally.

Have you tried this link? The log says SelfUpdate needs to be updated. It seems to be downloading, but cannot be staged for the update.

How do I reset Windows Update components?

yes, I cold boot every Monday....I also tried the reset and the troubleshoot with same results...BTW, the renamed folder that is there now was renamed in may, 2011...I don't remember doing it...

You may want to delete the old folders, since obviously is it not longer being used.

The link I gave you, if you follow the "Fix it Yourself" option shows what files in the Software Distribution folder need to be removed and some other data base files that are hidden.

But the troubleshooter found nothing wrong, or was unable to repair something? It does list a partial description of any areas it sees a problem.

I have been out of town all last week, but am going to get started on this again later today...Thanks for hanging with me...

I ran the troubleshooter again and it detected some corrupt files which it said it fixed. I am going to try the sp1 update again and let you know...
