I have tried the registry edit myself on my Windows XP computer and it worked for me. It does enable security update but then you could probably download them yourself manually from the Microsoft website. I don't update my computer much anyway. My Windows 7 PC I am using to post this only gets update when I feel like it not every week as some people do.
