Windows 7 World of Warcraft 25man FPS Issues

New Member
In 25 mans, on all low settings, I will go between 5-15 FPS. More often than not, <10FPS.

My Computer Specs-
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66 GHz
Motherboard: ASUS P5N-D
Graphics Card: NVIDIA 9800GT
Memory: 4 gigs
Hard Drive: Hitachi HDP725050GLA SCSI
OS: Windows 7

All drivers, that I can tell, are updated. I cannot imagine that it would be the hardware, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Hi Rutiene,
have you recently changed something like a driver? I assume that your system ran the game fine at one point and something has happened to slow it down? Is this the case?

No, actually. I bought this computer last year with Vista, and it was this bad and I thought it was cause of Vista bloat. When I upgraded, I did do a clean Windows 7 install.

woah man there's clearly something wrong with it, cos runs on my old PC (Intel Quad with 8800 & 4gig ram Win7 x64 Ultimate) beyond perfectly, even more so on my current rig, so it doesn't sound like the game itself if you've had same issues on fresh installs of windows the cause might be cranky pings to the Blizzard servers, or you haven't setup the port forwards on your router.

Update:
A quick look around the web suggests if your using something called "Recount" disable this for 25-man raids as its a serious bandwidth hog, along with any other addons and voip apps and see if that helps.

woah man there's clearly something wrong with it, cos runs on my old PC (Intel Quad with 8800 & 4gig ram Win7 x64 Ultimate) beyond perfectly, even more so on my current rig, so it doesn't sound like the game itself if you've had same issues on fresh installs of windows the cause might be cranky pings to the Blizzard servers, or you haven't setup the port forwards on your router.

Update:

I did set up the port forwards on my router, but just to be safe, which one am I supposed to do exactly?

Also, I don't use Recount. I think you're focusing on latency problems and not FPS though.

Taken from Portforwarding.com:-

World of Warcraft communicates on port 3724 with the TCP protocol. The patching process requires port 3724, 6112, and 6881-6999. Once again to download the patches for World of Warcraft you should forward the following ports.

3724 TCP 6112 TCP 6881-6999 TCP

If you can not forward ranges of ports and are only planning on having one computer playing WoW, just forward ports 3724 TCP and 6112 TCP. The 6881-6999 port range is mainly used where multiple computers on a network may be trying to play WoW at the same time.

Yea I realise I mention latency related issues, but it's not unknown for games to drop frame rates when having problems like latency, most games just use ghosting etc, I'm not sure about WOW's method. I also take it that this issue doesn't happen with your other games?

Ok now thats eliminated I would be looking at things like the thermals during use of the system, GPU and CPU in case there's a airflow problem as overheating is a common cause of system stuttering or appalling frame rates for no obvious reason, it could even suggest the PSU isn't doing a very good job of voltage supply.

Get a program such as coretemp and run some burn in test software for a hour and see what sort of temperatures peak at, and report back the results.

Core Temp

|MG| Prime95 25.11 Download

In 25 mans, on all low settings, I will go between 5-15 FPS. More often than not, <10FPS.

My Computer Specs-
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66 GHz
Motherboard: ASUS P5N-D
Graphics Card: NVIDIA 9800GT
Memory: 4 gigs
Hard Drive: Hitachi HDP725050GLA SCSI
OS: Windows 7

All drivers, that I can tell, are updated. I cannot imagine that it would be the hardware, so I'm not sure what's going on.

although wow is generally cpu intensive your quad core is not better than a dual core when it comes to the way wow is written and you cannot get away from the fact that anything graphical is rendered by your gfx card ?

all of your spec does look up to the job but your bottleneck in 25 man raids will be the graphics card, which suggests two possible causes and cures ?

the first is I see your 9800GT draws 105w so if your power supply is 300W or close, or possibly a sub standard no name PSU rated at 400 - 500W that can cause slowdown in rendering ?

the other possible cure could be simply buy a newer card that is less power hungry ?

I would be interested to see how well your setup performed with 3D mark ?

I'm currently downloading 3D Mark, so I'll have that for you soon. I'm pretty sure my PSU was more than sufficient for my card+everything else when I bought it. I don't remember the specifics though.

So, I used CoreTemp just now and I'm at 42C-47C for my hottest core. I think I get up to 60C max after a long day and running WoW. Same with my GPU.

Well 3dmark doesn't really cut it as a system stress test, but based on that benchmark result I guess those temps don't seem too bad. There's absolutely no way a 9800 with even a half used quad cpu should drop frames on WOW, so the issue has to be drivers (but you've changed OS so that's not likely cause), BIOS needing updated and tweaked correctly, faulty ram, or the PSU is not chucking out enough juice to the system and GPU. Sadlly unless you can borrow some spare parts that are higher spec than your current ones to test with, I'm not sure where you need to begin. Out of interest what speed is the ram and brand etc? as sometimes certain brands simply don't go with certain motherboards.

My test: ORB - World of Performance

If that doesn't work, I did save the 3dmark result file, although I have no idea how to view it. My CPU score was really low... which makes me wonder if its a faulty CPU issue (although I've run CPU and RAM tests that came up clean) or if I just need to overclock...

Oops, sorry didn't see your memory question. Getting the info for you now. :)

Edit 1 Also, for the PSU, I'm using a Thermaltake Toughpower 600 W.
Edit 2 Memory upgrades from Crucial.com - Determine My Memory Needs

Says I'm using 2x DDR PC2-6400. I have no idea what brand. :S

Try upping your pagefile or dropping resolution (or both). If your using vsync, try turning on 'triple buffering'.

I have tried dropping my resolution, which did not net me a noticeable FPS increase. I have no idea what you mean by pagefile. Triple Buffering is turned on.

Sometimes this will net you a few extra FPS.. Check the screenshot as I'ved arrowed the route. Try changing the pagefile to the 'recommended' setting. I used to do this when Crysis first appeared and my old pc struggled to provide the necessary oomph.

Yeah, I've probably read over 20 threads on 'how to fix 25man fps'. It seems like the problem isn't easily solved because my FPS will stay about the same no matter if I turn everything down or not, although I still play with everything at the lowest setting. I've eliminated all mods which communicate, including recount, and nada. I've never gone a raid without using ANY addons (I usually keep 2-3 basic ones running) but maybe I should try it...

It might be worth a try? Like you I've been reading through a whole google page of links relating to the above and many suffer this problem even with fat systems!
Out of interest are you running with the latest Bios? This can sometimes help enormously and is definitely worth investigating..

if you look at the comparisons for similar specs thats about right, although 3dmark 2006 isn't really gonna give you quad core a fair crack since it probably wasn't even optimized to test even dual core back then. Vantage however is very mean with its scores.

^^^ I see, I see. So it might just be a WoW issue?

No, I'm not using the latest BIOS. I'm actually scared of bricking my computer, because I'm pretty hardware illiterate. It looks like one of the things they changed between my version and the new one is higher CPU compatibility for some CPU's. So... I'll go ahead and do that.
