I realize there are a number of XP/7 networking threads. I'm not seeing in any of them the specific situation I have so I'm starting antoher.

This is an existing wireless network, with three XP machines and one Vista machine. All connect and share just fine.
I'm adding one Win7 machine.

Win7 is connected to the network, viewing internet.
But Win7 network only shows the Win7 and Vista machines.

[FONT=Times New Roman, Times, serif]XP sees the Win7 machine in view workgroup computers. get error when try to connect: the server could not be found on this network
XP does not see Win7 in MyNetworkPlaces

Win7 does not see XP machine anywhere.
Win7 sees the Vista machine.
Vista sees the Win7. Error: windows confirmed Win7 is online but is not responding. Usually firewall issue.

Win7 can ping XP machine's IP.
XP can ping Win7 machine's IP.

turning off zonealarm on Win7 results in:
XP sees Win7, can view files. transferred file to Win7 machine.
Win7 machine received file from XP. still cannot see XP machines in Network.
Vista sees Win7, can view files.

I'm guessing I have two issues - one is the settings in ZoneAlarm to allow sharing. The other is having Win7 recognize the XP machines.

Any assistance with either would be appreciated.

Solution
It seems like you are facing some networking challenges with a mix of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 machines on your wireless network. Let's tackle the issues you've identified:

Issue 1: ZoneAlarm Settings for Sharing

  1. ZoneAlarm Firewall: ZoneAlarm may be blocking the network sharing between your Windows 7 machine and other devices. To resolve this:
    • Allow File and Printer Sharing: In ZoneAlarm, navigate to the Firewall settings and make sure that File and Printer Sharing is allowed.
    • Add Network IP Ranges: Consider adding the IP ranges of your local network to the trusted zones in ZoneAlarm to allow smooth communication.

Issue 2: Windows 7 Recognizing XP Machines

Issue 2: Windows 7 Recognizing XP Machines

  2. Network Discovery and File Sharing:
    • Enable Network Discovery: On the Windows 7 machine, ensure that Network Discovery is turned on. This allows the computer to see other devices on the network.
    • File and Printer Sharing: Enable File and Printer Sharing to allow sharing of files and printers across the network.

      Additional Troubleshooting Steps:

      • Workgroup Configuration: Make sure that all machines are on the same workgroup to enable seamless communication.
      • Network Sharing Permissions: Check the sharing permissions on each machine to ensure that shared folders are accessible.
      • Windows Firewall: Verify that the built-in Windows Firewall is not blocking the network traffic between the machines.

      Further Assistance:

If after following these steps you still encounter issues, you may want to:
      • Temporarily Disable ZoneAlarm: Disable ZoneAlarm temporarily to see if the network visibility improves.
      • Check Antivirus Software: Verify if any antivirus software is interfering with network communications.
By addressing these areas, you should be able to enhance network visibility and sharing capabilities between your Windows 7 and XP machines. Feel free to provide updates on your progress or if you need further assistance!
