I have a laptop which multi-boots between Windows7 and Windows8. I share an NTFS partition between the two OSs. If I boot into Windows8 and make changes with files in the shared NTFS partition, everything works fine and I can reboot into Windows8 with no problems. If, however, I subsequently...
Hello
I'd like to save an image of Windows 8 onto a second partition using Clonezilla, and have a couple of questions before proceeding:
1. Why does W8 create two partitions (350MB and 147.3GB) instead of just one?
2. When running fdisk in Linux, why does it display so many /dev/ramX...

Assume I want to check the partition NTFS integrity of a Win 7 system from a BootCD with WinXP.
Is this possible?
Or is the WinXP chkdsk utility outdated and NOT usable for Win 7 NTFS systems?
Peter
I had a BSOD yesterday , caused by ntfs.sys , the harddrives were checked by HD sentinel and are in excellent condition,
I am using windows 10 pro , upgraded from win 8.1 pro on intel i5 3450 based pc .
During first reboot, windows performed an auto disk check .
When i booted into windows...

Short version: I need to format my HDD to NTFS with no current OS.
Long version: I was happily running Windows 10, but wanted to do a re-installation to speed things up.
The installation hung at 1% for an hour or so, so I rebooted - no operating system. I downloaded a win10 iso and booted from...

Hi, I’m having a problem accessing some of my files. I think it might started when I changed laptops and restored a backed up copy of all my files on to the new computer. The old one had a FAT 32 file system with Windows 2K, and I formatted the new one, which is running XP as NTFS. I’m mainly...

Obviously the user can check the consistency of a FULL, whole NTFS hard disk by performing a "chkdsk" command and run in addition one of the well known tools (like MiniTool Partition Wizard) a surface test to check whether all sectors of a hard disk are ok.
But what if I don't want to check the...

Normally if a user accidentially deletes a file and want to recover it then he can take the following steps:
Load one of the many "undelete" tools (like Recuva) and let it detect, analyze and copy the file to another partition.
Now assume that the partition where the deleted files is stored has...
Assume I have a certain huge (> 2 GB) file and a second backup version of it on an external hard disk.
Both have exactly the same size and dates.
However when I compare them binary at the cmdprompt simplified with

Then there are somewhere differences...

Hello,
I am not a techie at all and wanted to see if someone could look at the results of my chkdsk and let me know if there are problems? I had some bad clusters and something called read failures. I'd really appreciate any help or light someone could shed on this. I have read up on this in...

I am sick of defragmenting really. My largest free space extent is 234.4GB. Why cant Microsoft just improve NTFS to stop fragmentation instead of relying on defragmentation? look at HFS+ and ext4 they prevent fragmentation first!
My NTFS non-system partition is now almost well defragmented. However this applies only to small and medium sized files.
There are still approx 40 big files (> 1 GB) which cannot be defragmented because there is no free single (!) space slot where they fit in.
So I need a way to shift all...

Hello,
I just accidentally deleted 4400 text files (1.5GB) on an NTFS volume that's probably heavily fragmented, although these files were created in a particular sequence. The files contain long columns of numerical data. If the undelete program takes one cluster from one file and another from...
