I have had an SSD failing on me so I opted to upgrade to win10 also if I was going to lose my OS (I couldn't clove the drive).
I have made a win10 installation on a different HHD and apparently (I didn't understand it then) the boot manager was still in the old SSD for replacement drive...
I had this machine wouldn't start, wouldn't repair, wouldn't reinstall, nothing... had a thread about it..
Well I took the drive out of that machine - we're talking Win10 - and stuck it in another machine as the system drive just to see what would happen, would it run or mainly would it cause...

Long story short, an internal HDD failed. I sent the drive to a data recovery service and they retrieved the data. They also created a .bin file that would allow me to boot the machine. I also received an internal HDD with a clone of the old HDD. I installed the cloned drive but I get "NTLDR...
