I have two HP Pavilion desktops runing Windows 7 and one HP Pavilion notebook using XP. I have set up HomeGroup on both desktops and downloaded the LLTD responder on the notebook. Both desktops have network discovery turned on and file and printer sharing turned on. The first desktop network map sees all three computers and can access all files of the laptop. It can access the public files and the external hard drives connected to the other desktop, but I get an error trying to access the C drive (need permission to access). The laptop cannot see the second desktop. I get a not accessible error message when I try to access the C drive of the first desktop. The second desktop network map shows all three computers, but nothing happens when clicking on either the first desktop or notebook icon. For now, I have uninstalled Norton Security Suite from the second desktop and the notebook. The first desktop has Norton Firewall turned on. Any clue as to why the second desktop will not access the other computers?

It seems like you're encountering some network sharing issues between your HP Pavilion desktops running Windows 7 and the HP Pavilion notebook running XP. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problems you're facing:

Permissions Issue Trying to Access C Drive:

  • Make sure that the user account you are using has the necessary permissions to access the C drive on the first desktop.
  • Try sharing the C drive explicitly by right-clicking on the drive, going to "Properties," then the "Sharing" tab, and sharing the drive with appropriate permissions.

Laptop Not Visible on the Network:

  • Check the workgroup settings on all devices to ensure they are all on the same workgroup.
  • Verify that...

  • Verify that the LLTD responder is properly installed and running on the XP notebook.
  • Ensure that network discovery and file sharing are enabled on the XP notebook.

Second Desktop Not Accessing Other Computers:

  • Disable Norton Firewall temporarily on the first desktop to see if it is causing any blocking.
  • Check the network profile on the second desktop (Private, Public, etc.) and ensure it's set correctly for your HomeGroup network.
  • Try creating a new HomeGroup to refresh the network settings on all devices.

Additional Suggestions:

  • Restart all devices (desktops and notebook) after making any changes to ensure they are applied.
  • Double-check the firewall settings on all devices to ensure they are not blocking network traffic.
By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the network sharing issues between your devices. If the problem persists, further investigation into firewall settings, network configurations, and permissions might be necessary.
