hi,
I just installed 7 (x64) on a friends PC. it's working fine except his sound isn't working.
He uses the onboard sound of an Asus M2N-MX board, which should be a Realtek ALC662 card.
the odd thing is that windows lists a properly installed "hd audio device" in the device manager, but when he goes to control panel -> sound and hardware -> sound there is only one SPDIF audio-device listed there. he has his sound system connected via normal 3.5mm jacks to his soundcard, so nothing digital and certainly no SPDIF.

I already tried to install those drivers in vista compatibility mode:

but it didn't do the trick. like I said, it seems the drivers themselve work fine and I guess if we had something to connect to the SPDIF out it would work, but we don't so I can't test it :D the only problem is that the normal speaker out of the soundcard isn't even listed by windows.

ideas? thanks

Solution
It seems like the issue with your friend's PC's sound not working properly might be related to how Windows is recognizing and configuring the audio output. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Default Playback Device:
    • Right-click on the volume icon in the system tray and select "Sounds."
    • Go to the "Playback" tab and check if the correct playback device (Realtek ALC662) is set as the default.
    []Enable Hidden Devices:
    • In the "Sound" settings, go to the "Playback" tab and right-click in the window.
    • Select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices," and check if the missing playback device appears...

]Update or Roll Back Audio Drivers:
    • Ensure that the Realtek audio drivers are up-to-date. Visit the Asus support website and download the latest drivers for the specific motherboard model.
    • If the latest drivers do not work, try rolling back to the previous version of the audio drivers.
    []Reinstall Audio Drivers:
    • Uninstall the current audio drivers completely.
    • Restart the PC and let Windows automatically reinstall the drivers or manually install the downloaded drivers.
    [
    ]BIOS Settings:
    • Check the BIOS settings to ensure that the onboard audio is enabled.
    []Windows Troubleshooter:
    • Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter to diagnose and potentially fix audio-related issues.
    [
    ]Hardware Check:
    • Ensure that the speakers are connected correctly to the correct audio jacks on the PC.

      Additional Considerations:

    • Third-Party Sound Management Software:
    • Some sound management software might conflict with Windows. Consider uninstalling any third-party audio applications.
    • Safe Mode Boot:
    • booting into Safe Mode to see if the sound works there, which can help isolate software conflicts.
    • System Restore:
    • If the issue occurred after a recent update or software installation, consider using System Restore to revert to a previous working state. Try these steps and see if they help resolve the sound issue on your friend's PC. Let me know if you need further assistance!
