Windows 8 Back to Windows Firewall?

Hi again...

"I also found these registry entries when enabling the firewall with Process Monitor running. You might check to see if you show them and what values they have.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MpsSvc\Star tOverride

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Rpc\SecurityService\Defaul tAuthLevel"

I didn't find either of the locations shown in the lines above...

HKLM 01.JPG

HKLM 02.JPG

These show the open location and the indicated folders aren't present if I'm in the right place, I couldn't find any other HKLM location but these.

Here's another post addressing this problem.

The only problem is that the things I'm finding are for Vista and Windows 7 and I'm not sure that it's safe to use them with 8.

I can't tell you how many time I've wished I left well enough alone. LOL

I down loaded the registry files but haven't done anything with them.

Manual Fix

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BFE

You should able to start firewall now

You may also be missing security center windows defender ,BITS and windows update services

Download
Security center -wscsvc
Windows defender - windefend
BITS - BITS
Windows update - wuauserv

Launch them and click YES when you get a UAC prompt
Good luck

Hey Mike,

If the BFE service was not running, you should be getting a dependency error along with the access denied.

A good test would be to stop the BFE service then try to start the Firewall and see if you do. Then restart the BFE service. This would do two things. First make sure BFE is running and also test your permissions for that registry key.

Since the permissions for MspSvc.dll, MspSvc.drv and BFE are inherited from the CurrentControlSet key, you might compare its permissions with the ControlSet001 to see if they are the same. The test above may have already confirmed, but probably still good to check.

Hi

Since I got one of those annoying Link Back Posts on this for some reason I'll just update and say that after months of trying I have never succeeded in getting the firewall to start.

The COMODO firewall is working fine and I'm not going to mess with it anymore.

If the time comes when I have to reinstall I'll try again.
