Windows 7 BSOD when using Firefox

New Member
Hi,

I have been getting BSOD's only when using Firefox. Started happening about 2 - 3 months ago. Stopped using FF and have been using IE 9 for the last month and have not had one BSOD since, but I really hate IE. I downloaded the latest version of FF yesterday hoping that a new version might have fixed the issue. Five minutes later and BSOD again.

Anything you can see?

Thanks in advance...

Terry

This problem device is in your MSINFO32 report. It seems to be a part of your Colasoft Packet Capture Engine
CSN5PDTS82x64 NDIS Protocol Driver ROOT\LEGACY_CSN5PDTS82X64\0000 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.
Please un-install it and see if that removes it from the Problem Devices section of MSINFO32. Due to the info in the WER section of MSINFO32, I suspect that this is the cause of your problems.

If you are overclocking any components, please stop while we are troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the BSOD's have stopped.

Please un-install Gigabyte's EasyTune6 (ET6) and EasySaver utilities as they are known to cause BSOD's in some Win7 systems.

Please remove AMD Special Tools as it dates from 2008 and is likely incompatible with Win7

Please remove GIGABYTE On/Off Charge driver as it is known to cause BSOD's also.

Please update/remove these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

First, thank you very much for looking at this. Ok, a lot to do.

Removed the NDIS Protocol Driver.

Had AMD Overdrive turned on, but hadn't really done much with it. Turned it off for now.

Un-installed EasyTune6, but could not find EasySaver. (found it later)

Not sure which AMD Special Tools you are refering to. I am using Revo Uninstaller. I see AMD Catalyst Install Manager (my video driver) and AMD GPU Clock Tool. I guess you could be talking about the clock tool. Let me know if that is what I should remove.

I do not see Gigabyte On/Off charge driver in Revo either. Please advise how to remove it.

As far as all the drivers, I have tried to update or remove any I could find. Comments below:

For the AMD driver, I updated it, but have had issues in the past with sound dropping and have had to revert to an older driver to correct it. I have been hestitant to upgrade for a while. If I have issues again, I will need to go back to the old, stable driver.

Pure Networks, Inc. Network Magic NDIS Relay Driver and Pure Networks, Inc. Network Magic Address Resolution Protocol Driver - This is an old Linksys wifi router. They don't appear to have a newer version, but I do not want to uninstall it as it is still in use.

Removed Blackberry software.

Gigabyte Easy Saver - mobo power utility driver - Uninstalled.

Removed DirecTV to PC.

Intel Storage drivers - I downloaded and installed these, but there was an error when writing to the registry and it says it cancelled. System rebooted fine.

NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver & NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver - Installed new driver from DriverGuide.

GIGABYTE On/Off Charge driver - Don't see this program. Went through startup and deleted all Gygabyte apps.

Did all this around four hours ago and have been in and out of FF since this with no BSOD's.

Attaching new info in case you see anything else:

I've never seen it (the Special Tool)00 associated with the Install Manager, so it's most likely the GPU Clock Tool.

As for the rest of the stuff, let's just leave it as it is right now and see if that stops the BSOD's for good.
If it does, then you've solved the problem - if not, then we can try the rest of the possible issues.

Good Luck!

It's not all that unusual for this to happen. On most BSOD topics it takes at least 2 pages of posts to finish.
Please zip up and upload the new memory dumps (they're located in C:\Windows\Minidump)

While waiting for a reply, please run Driver Verifier according to these directions: Driver Verifier Settings

It's most likely a problem with something that's accessing the network (as the BSOD's blame Windows networking drivers) but that can be almost anything. Hopefully the Driver Verifier memory dumps will point out the offending driver to us.

Nice tool you have there for blowing up a computer. Wouldn't even reboot.

The stop error message is BAD_POOL_CALLER. The file that the error was found in was SmartDefragDriver.sys. The second attachment is a screenshot in case there is more info you need there.

Thanks again for trying to help.

Yep, Driver Verifier can be a real chore (that's why there's instructions at the bottom on how to recover from it)

Uninstall Smart Defrag and see if that stops the BSOD's. Make sure that Driver Verifier is turned off also.
Lucky that you caught the BSOD screen shot - there's not record of the crash in the reports!

Check to see if there's a MEMORY.dmp file in C:\Windows that's dated from the time that the last crash happened. Let us know if there is (but don't try and upload it as it'll be too big).

Uninstalled Smart Defrag. Made sure verifier off. Looked for dump file, but did not find one.

Opened FF, went to Yahoo news. Read a couple articles. Opened new window to article with a slideshow. Clicked on next slide. BSOD.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

NETIO.SYS

:(

That's similar to the others that we've seen.
Did it leave a memory dump? If so, please zip it up and upload it.

Try Driver Verifier again. It shouldn't blame Smart Defrag again since you uninstalled it.
Maybe there's more than one cause here?

No, not the MEMORY.dmp file - only the minidump (if available) it's in C:\Windows\Minidump
I don't expect anything significant from it, so it's not essential that we look at it. The next one from the Driver Verifier is more important.

The 2 major suspects at this point are the Special Tools driver (it's still present) and the Network Magic.

Unsuspected, but present in the raw stack text output, is drivers associated with McAfee. Please do this:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free anti-virus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- un-install the McAfee from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of McAfee using this free tool: How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee products using the Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR) (This link has changed a lot. If it doesn't work, search for McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool)
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free anti-virus, then check to ensure that the Windows Firewall is turned on.
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's
NOTE: NEVER run more than 1 anti-virus, firewall, Internet Security/Security Center application at the same time.

If nothing shows up in the Driver Verifier after 36 hours, then turn it off (as it's not likely that we'll get anything from it).

Please update/remove these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! If unable to un-install them normally (and the BSOD's continue) then I'll suggest a method for removing them safely - one at a time.:

Sorry John, I haven't forgot about you. Just been busy the last two days. Ran verifier for about a day, but needed my PC and it made it so slow, I killed it off. Just started my vacation for the rest of the year, so will make some time in the next day or two to turn it back on and see if it can break it. Unfortunately, since it only gets a BSOD when using Firefox, if I am not doing something online online there is not much chance for it to fail.

I will also do the other clean up listed above and get back to you.

Thanks again for all the time you put into these...

Not a problem. I get an email when you reply, so I'm not spending any time waiting/looking for a reply.

When you turn on Driver Verifier - do the things that usually cause a BSOD.

If you don't get any BSOD's, then that's a sign that it might not be a 3rd party driver.
If that's the case, then we have to wonder about broken hardware.

I have started the verifier, but now have a contractor over doing a repair to our house. Are there any tools like a stress testerI could use to open Firefox, load a page, close it down, etc, so I could kinda try to find this error remotely?

I'm sure that there's some sort of tool like that somewhere on the web - but I haven't a clue of where to find it.

Good luck!

Ok, ran verifier for another 24+ hours and could not get a BSOD. Turned off the verifier and of course got a BSOD within an hour. I think I did all the clean up you requested. I ran the Win7 diagnostic tool and was going to attach the logs, but I have met my upload quota and cannot seem to find out how I can delete some current attachments so I can load the latest logs. Let me know.
