On restart everything works until the windows logo goes off, the user log in screen should then appear but the screen just goes black and stays like that.
I've tried system repair - no good.
I've tried system restore to the last point given (only two restore points available?).
This actually gets me in but as soon as I shut down and then try and re boot the problem starts again ie black screen.

Any ideas?

P.S. This is on a relatively new toshiba laptop. I've not recently installed any hardware or software other than updates

You can download the bit and OS version ISO, burn it, and reinstall the OS using your COA on the bottom of your laptop.

You probably have warranty? I recommend you take it to the retailer. On the long run, it'll be the best solution.

Best wishes.

Nope unfortunately that has run out, wanted to try other remedies before I visit the recovery partition and reset
