Windows 7 CAN'T PROPERLY CONNECT TO EXTERNAL MONITOR

I'm running Win7 Pro 64 with SP1 on a Sony Vaio Z (VPCZ1) laptop, and I want to connect to an external monitor, preferably via the HDMI port. However, I cannot properly connect to external displays at all. For whatever reason, my computer isn't automatically detecting that the monitor is plugged in, despite the fact that this has worked before. Additionally, the computer seems unable to display a resolution higher than 1600 x 1200 over VGA, which is pretty annoying as it's a 1900 x 1200 monitor, so the image distortion is unsettling.

Additionally, no matter how I set my graphics or whether or not I'm trying to connect to an external display, my computer seems like it's constantly trying to connect to some low res monitor via VGA, as seen in the screenshot below:

Any ideas for what I can do to fix this?
