If this really is for an XP machine, I would highly recommend not connecting to the internet at all. There are tons of unpatched vulnerabilities for XP and no fixes.

I concur with Neemo on this one. Not connecting to the Internet at all with this machine is going to be a lot easier than trying to configure either a software firewall from Norton or someone else, or a hardware firewall like a modem/router combo unit or Wi-Fi router, which takes much more networking skill to do. And even then, unless you're a professional, you're unlikely to close up all the holes are your home network to keep hackers out of an XP system.
