Crysis 2: Gameplay impressions | GamesRadar

Never underestimate the power of a good demo-er. From what should have been a sterling first look at the gameplay of Crysis 2 ended up as a bit of ham-fisted blast-a-thon that barely showed off the brilliance of this New York-based shooter. It's ironic as we were told at the beginning of the demo just how varied the game allows you to be - stealthy, gung-ho or tactical. Yet they were all mashed into one big bullet-filled patty.

Regardless, you can still just about see the genius shining through. Everything about Crysis is big and dramatic. From the way that Prophet (what they're calling the hero in the demo) drops from the sky and lands with a thunderous thud when leaping from buildings to the huge sniper rifles you can fire while invisible. Heck, you can even twat enemies with parasols if you like. But it's the NYC setting, which thrills us most. A place, say the developers, will help to drive the story rather than the island action of the previous game.

OK, so loads of titles use the Big Apple as a backdrop but combined with the superb visuals that Crytek are capable of producing Crysis 2 is already looking hot.

The demo we were walked through starts off with Prophet staring out from a bust up building on Wall Street. Choppers fly past and debris falls from the skyscraper as the camera pans around the incredibly detailed destruction below.

A quick leap to the ground, from some 20 stories high or so, and Prophet is scanning the area. Marking off his targets with his nanosuits goggles. All starts off well - a huge jump lands him behind an enemy on rooftop who meets his maker with a stealth kill. Another enemy is at the end of walkway but rather than remain invisible all hell breaks loose as Prophet opens fire with a machine gun that's as loud as war. Soon there are soldiers flanking and peppering our hero from all angles, which he quickly deals with.

But as the dust settles, Prophet is invisible again and staring down the sights of a sniper rifle ready to take out a distant enemy, sadly a stray shot is fired and suddenly his position is revealed again meaning more strafing and shooting. It's at this point we wonder whether God mode is on.

The rest of the rooftop action is full of run and gun, apart from two key moments when a) a guard is picked up by his throat and thrown through a window to his death and b) a parasol is used to twat an enemy unconscious.

We also get to see our hero in an unfamiliar, vulnerable position as he's captured by the enemy and has all his powers depleted. Mysteriously, his suit powers up again when a giant enemy spike erupts through a building and kills all the grunts around him with its spooky power.

As he regains full strength he takes on a few aliens in a dazzle of explosions, grenades and uber violence and then the demo ends. We're already looking forward to this immensely, and even though the demo was a bit slap-dash it's plain to see it's going to be great.

Hi Hulk,
the latest patch can be found in two ways (just for future ref). You can either navigate to your 'Bin 32' folder found in the actual Crysis 2 folder ( C: Drive/Program files/Electronic arts/Crytek/Crysis 2/bin 32)
Inside you'll find the Crysis 2 exe and Crysis 2 'launcher'. Click the launcher to update.

You can also try the official site found here: Link Removed due to 404 Error

On this occasion though and just for ease you can find the latest 1.8 patch here: Patches and Fixes: Crysis 2 v1.8 Patch - Demo Movie Patch Download Section - GamersHell.com
Release notes for the patch can be found a few posts back from this one.
Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

Strange as it works fine for me... Are you sure your placing in the correct folder?

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

yea, even checked the autolog thing and it has changed the settings, looks visually the same in regards to motion blur and smudgey fx, I'll give it a try with this linked app on the off chance it's a newer build, but I did try when it first came out.

EDIT:
Ok this tool version is working for me now, although without as much blurryness, theres a very distinct shimmer unless Edge AA is used.

That's settings I'm using for best quality... but as I say its shimmering on some static objects

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

Glad to hear you got at least some resolve.. Another tip we've found is to set the FPS to 33 (regardless of your pc build) and this seems to give a sharper/smoother quality. Hopefully it won't be too long before we get the advanced settings 'ingame' (maybe next week?) I know some features are being tweaked for certain cards but I guess we will have to wait and see.
Another thing that is slightly bugging me is the fact that driver support from AMD is almost nil. Ok they released the new CAP for crossfire guys but I'm pretty sure we haven't seen a driver that's yet been optimised for Crysis 2. Luckily the game runs pretty darn well but it would be nice to see AMD actually spending time on it..

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

For those wondering where the Cryengine 3 SDK is, here is an open letter from Cevat Yerli:

An open letter to the Crytek Modding Community.

Hello to all of you.
Here at Crytek we value our community, and we love what you do with our engine. In recent times our focus has been heavily on the development of Crysis 2, however our modding community has been, and remains, very important to us.
So, I wanted to tell you about our plans for supporting you in the future with some really exciting news, which I want to share with you now. Modding with the most powerful game engine is coming back!
We want to see what you guys can do with CryENGINE 3 and we hope we'll be as amazed with the things you create as we have been over the past few years. This time around, we're going to do things in a different way - offering you the right tools to achieve your vision.
First of all, we will be launching an Editor for Crysis 2 early in summer. This will allow you to build new maps, items and more custom content for Crysis 2. For teams looking for even more creative freedom, we have another option: The free CRYENGINE SDK.
Be Free
In August 2011 we will be launching a free CryENGINE SDK. If you want to use it for fun, like all our previous MOD SDKs it will be completely free of charge, to anyone who wants to play with it! You just register, download the SDK with a personalized license key and you're good to go!
Be Creative
We'll be giving you access to the latest, greatest version of CryENGINE 3 - the same engine we use internally, the same engine we give to our licensees, the same engine that powers Crysis 2.
This will be a complete version of our engine, including C++ code access, our content exporters (including our LiveCreate real-time pipeline), shader code, game sample code from Crysis 2, script samples, new improved Flowgraph and a whole host of great asset examples, which will allow teams to build complete games from scratch for PC.
Be The Developer
With all this power in your hands - we know you're going to do some amazing things with the engine, so we're working out how best to support you.
We'll also be sharing our documentation with you, which is written by the developers of the engine, and we'll be giving you a new and improved crymod.com. We'll update the Free CryENGINE SDK regularly, to make sure you have access to all the advances we make to CryENGINE 3.
If you want to use it to make a game to launch commercially, we'd like to help you with that. If you want to take your product down a traditional commercial route, we will offer an innovative low cost licensing model if you want to release your game digitally.
If you're looking to use CryENGINE for non-gaming purposes, we'll have a per-seat business model for the engine - please enquire at mycryengine.com for further details.
So to go over the details again:
Our next release will be the Crysis 2 Editor, this is for those of you who want to create content for Crysis 2. In August 2011, we will launch our Free CryENGINE SDK for all of you who want to create totally new content on CryENGINE 3. If you just want to make fun, free projects, you can do that free of charge. If you want to try and commercialise your game, we'll be here to help you with that.
I truly value the contribution you have all made to our company and I hope we can continue giving back to you in future.
All the best,

Cevat Yerli

CEO & President of Crytek

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

Well that certainly silences the many critics of Crysis2 (Of which I was one, despite buying it after playing the demo that didn't hugely impress me) in regards to modding tools etc... Things are looking up for the long term of the games multiplayer now, now if they can just get DX11 Tesselated texturing done for the next big patch...

Did many of you see the tech video that shows the director engine for making machinma? looks one of the biggest reasons to get excited about the tools if you ask me.

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

Nope I didn't watch that.. I'll check it out later thanks. Crytek know that for maximum longevity then releasing the SDK was really the only way to go I mean look at Crysis and Crysis Warhead, still going strong.

Well this is patch week and although I don't think we will see any DX11 features yet (the inclusion of POM (Parrallax Occlusion mapping) would be a start) hopefully a few of the annoying bugs will be sorted.

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

Highwayman try popping this command at the top of the autoexec:

DumpCommandsVars

You should see a difference with a less blurry picture..

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

Update: Patch should now be available and automatically download. Please check that your version has been updated to the latest "1.4.0.0" version via the Crysis2.exe details.

Not all servers are updated to the latest version so there will be a short period of time where only a limited amount of servers are available but keep trying and more servers/slots will become available soon!

Patch 1.4 released!: Link Removed due to 404 Error

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

Just remember to use crysis2launcher.exe not crysis2.exe to get the update automatically.

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

I cant see them charging for it on PC if they are bringing out a free map editor in June/july

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

Let's hope your right although:...

In other news, fans of Crysis 2 multiplayer will get new maps as the first downloadable content hits the web. The 'Retaliation Pack' comes with four new maps: Park Avenue, Transit, Shipyard and Compound. It will be available for purchase for all platforms on May 17th in North America and 18th in Europe with the price being $9.99 (800 Microsoft Points). Watch the trailer after the break.

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

Hmm would seem like a fleecing operation then? unless they poured the same amount of work into it that Bad Co Vietnam did, ie maps and weapons and new gameplay tactics etc, but from the video clips it just looks like they took levels from single player that were already about 80% suitable for multi anyway and probably just popped in some barriers to block out the sides of map, if this is indeed the case I'll just wait on the editor and remake it manually from there.

As for console owners, well they willl have to bite the bullet since they cant make maps can they...lol

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

I think only the Shipyard map is new and as you say the rest are from SP. Why Crytek are choosing to release this DLC before fully fixing the game is poor form and I would imagine this is more to do with EA than Crytek themselves. It's no surprise then to note that the pc community is rather unimpressed (to say the least).
Luckily for me I don't have too many bugz whilst playing either SP or MP although what bugz there are do need addressing especially before they try to drag even more money out of us..

Re: Crysis 2-Prophets Journey

wasn't the shipard the bit outside that scientists house on single player? anyway if they added a PERK-FREE mode for multi along with larger multiplayer maps (at least on the scale of the large ones of crysis wars) with vehicles, then i'd slap cash at it...otherwise...skip

Would be indeed great but unfortunately not with this pack.

Re: Crysis 2-Be strong+System requirements

I don't think my netbook can run Crysis 2. LOL

Not running on a intel video chip... think even the newest on-die graphics by intel would struggle to get past 15 fps on low detail.

Having viewed it again it does look like the map found in 'Lab Rat' with some ships or ship added..
