Hi all, recently I had a virus so I did a recovery to an old start date, now I have no desktop. Windows 7 loads up, I put in my password and then I get a blue screen..through CTRL+ALT+DEL I can get to the internet (works fine) and also my Computer drives. However nothing loads on my desktop. I have tried to run Explorer.exe...it does nothing. Any suggestions?

Hi Angela,
can you navigate to your hard drive and then your Windows folder and look for a folder called 'Minidump'. Once found can you zip the contents and post them to this forum. We will then be able to check through the dmp files and see what the problem is. If you don't find anything check out the following:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click System.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
4. In the Write debugging information list, click Small memory dump (64k).
the next time you blue screen you will now get a file created..
In the meantime, have you tried to go back further?
Another thing you could try is changing your boot order to boot from the win 7 disk (CD/DVD first) and then at the install page choose 'Repair'. this will repair your boot up files and may help.

Thanks for your reply. I am not very computer savy...I did find the minidump..but im having a hard time zipping it, since Im sure Ive never done that before.Within the minidump folder there are 4 other folders....dmp. From there how do I get it here? I do have something called windows and windows.old (not sure if that matters-thats where the minidump is) I cannot click Start and go throught the other process...I have no start up options at all. I tried to get to it another way but I can't seem to find it. Thanks so much for your help. Also I had already tired the boot order thing..and repair...nothing changed unless I did it wrong. Ill give it another try. Thanks again for the response...this is far from my area of expertise...and Id really like to save a trip to the comp. tech.

Much thanks for the dmps.. They relate to a memory management issue and could be down to the fact you have very old drivers or a problem with your memory. Let's try the driver method first..

Additionally, if the updates won't fix it, run memtest overnight:

I was asked to give some advice in this thread. It's very simple and the only way to proceed. Blank the drive out by low level formatting it with Killdisk.
Then proceed to install Windows 7 cleanly, after.
If you still want to use Vista because you don't have 7, make sure you perform a Windows Update to install Service Pack 2 for it.
Any other approach in this case is simply asking for future problems. There would be many of them and privacy/security would be highly compromised.

Thanks so much for all your help guys!! Over the weekend I had alot more issues...I did another recovery and managed to get my desktop back, although I still had the issue of the "internet explorer has stopped working" which is what started this in the first place. It comes up every minute or so. Then out of nowhere, the blue screen happened. I did find a windows malicious software finder. I ran that and it found 7 viruses. Although after that every button I pressed a message would come up saying a virus was detected and I couldnt perform that function. So at this point I have bought Norton Antivirus and I will be installing it tonight. I am hoping that it will remove the viruses causing me all these problems. I have read all your threads and will be applying those suggested as well. Ill let you know how I make out. Thanks again for all your help.

I feel I have to tell ya this for your own benefit.
I'm doing you the hugest favor I possibly can to save you from so much future problems that 100% percent will happen, and become worse, if you use Norton.
If you still choose to not follow my advice, then don't even think about entering a credit card number or any personal info into your pc for any reason. You will then have to deal with all the ramifications of identity theft.
