What is generating these errors in W8 on a SATA drive is becoming apparent. What can eliminate them is not...

SChannel errors are seen after each Windows Update (and perhaps in other instances).

Distributed COM permission errors pop up after clicking on certain start menu tiles (and that may not be the only cause).

Though several posts in forums suggest how to change permissions via Component Services and the registry, none of those measures is available here. Greyed out or "access denied."

Drivers are as up-to-date as can be found. W7 runs precisely the same software/hardware on this box - but on an SSD drive - without the errors.

Despite the DCom error, the clicked start menu items (weather and finance) do eventually appear.

It seems like you're encountering some specific errors on Windows 8, particularly related to SChannel errors after Windows Updates and Distributed COM (DCom) permission errors when clicking on certain Start menu tiles. Here are some insights into the possible causes of these errors and how to potentially address them:

SChannel Errors after Windows Updates:

  • Cause: SChannel errors are often related to SSL/TLS communication issues. They can occur due to misconfigurations, outdated protocols, or problems with certificates.
  • Resolution: To address SChannel errors, you can try:
  1. Ensuring that your system's date and time settings are accurate.
  2. Checking for updates to your browser and applications that...

  2. Checking for updates to your browser and applications that might be triggering the SChannel errors.
  3. Verifying that your system's TLS protocols are correctly configured.
  4. Checking the Event Viewer for more detailed information on the specific SChannel error codes to diagnose the issue further.

    Distributed COM Permission Errors:

    • Cause: DCom permission errors typically occur due to misconfigured permissions for specific applications or services.
    • Resolution: To mitigate DCom permission errors, you can attempt the following steps:
[]Check the permissions on the affected applications or services via Component Services (dcomcnfg) and adjust them if necessary. []Verify if any specific software installations or recent changes might be triggering the DCom errors. []Run a System File Checker (SFC) scan to check for and repair system file integrity issues. []Consider disabling specific Start menu tiles temporarily to see if the errors persist.

    Other Considerations:

    • SSD vs. SATA Drive: It's interesting to note that you mentioned running Windows 7 on an SSD without encountering these errors. The difference in drive types could potentially impact system performance and error occurrences.

      Recommendations:

      1. Registry Edits: If permissions changes via the Registry or Component Services are inaccessible, ensure that you are logged in with administrative rights and that the User Account Control (UAC) settings are not overly restrictive.
  1. Testing: Since the errors are specific to Windows 8 on a SATA drive, consider testing the system on another drive (if feasible) to confirm if the drive type is a factor in the error occurrences.
  2. Updates: Regularly check for driver updates, Windows Updates, and firmware updates for your hardware components to ensure optimal system performance and compatibility. By addressing these points, you may be able to gain more insight into the root causes of the errors and find viable solutions to resolve them effectively.
