Windows 7 explorer file view is too narrow

This problem is hard to describe:
when opening a new window explorer (to see the filesystem - not the explorer internet browser)
the files always appear by default in a very narrow frame\pane\view.
how can I change it to be larger?

Hello and welcome to the forums.
Your current view may be improved if you turn off the preview pane.
Tool bar area, just to the left of the Help Icon "?", not sure how to describe its' appearance but if you hover your mouse pointer over it you should see a tool tip referencing the preview pane.
