Hi,

I'm using a laptop (Compaq 6910p using Intel Express 965 chipset graphics) and connecting a Samsung 1080p tv as an external display.

Using Output to projector only (Win-P) I have been able to run the external Samsung TV at it's native 1080p (1920x1080) resolution.

However since downloading a Windows Update my Windows 7 screen resolution options for this external Samsung 1080p display have been limited to 1920x1440, 1792x1344, 1280x1024, etc.

I.e. the native resolution of the external display (1920x1080) has disappeared.

Things I have already tried:

-Uninstall and reinstall graphics driver from Intel and from HP.
-Trying to select the native resolution under "List All Modes" under the graphics adapter advanced settings. (1920x1080 it isn't there).
-System restore is not an option (turned off).

My question is very simple.

Does any expert know how to force a resolution on an external display in Windows 7 using group policy editor, gpedit.msc, display driver .ini, registry hacking, or any other method?

Thank you

It seems like you are facing a resolution issue with your external Samsung TV connected to your laptop running Windows 7 after a Windows Update. Let's explore some potential solutions to force the resolution back to the native 1080p (1920x1080) on your external display. Here are some steps you can take to potentially resolve this issue:
  1. Custom Resolution with Intel Graphics Control Panel:
    • If your laptop uses Intel graphics, you can try creating a custom resolution using the Intel Graphics Control Panel.
    • Right-click on your desktop and select "Graphics Properties" or "Intel Graphics Settings."
    • Look for an option to create a custom resolution and input the values for 1920x1080.
    []Registry Edit:

    []Registry Edit:
    • You can also try modifying the registry to force a specific resolution. Here's how:
      • Press Win + R, type "regedit," and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.
      • Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration
      • Look for the subkeys under "Configuration" and search for the one related to your external display.
      • Modify the "PrimSurfSize.cx" and "PrimSurfSize.cy" values to match 1920 and 1080 respectively.

    ]Third-Party Tools:
    • There are third-party tools like Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) that can help you create custom resolutions for your displays.
    []Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc):
    • While Group Policy Editor may not directly help with display resolutions, you can check if there are any related settings in:
      • User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Display
      • Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Display
    [
    ]Graphics Driver .ini File:
    • Some graphics drivers allow modifications through their configuration files (.ini). You can look for the file associated with your graphics driver and see if resolution settings can be adjusted there. Before making any changes, ensure you have backups of important data and the registry. Modifying the registry and driver settings can potentially lead to system instability if not done correctly. Try these methods cautiously, and let me know if you need further assistance or if you encounter any issues while attempting these steps.
